Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
The clinic is huge, but everyone is very professional and polite.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Gustafson and our nurse, Leslie, have been extremely helpful with our whole process. The reason we switched is because I asked for help with my mental health from our previous doctor, who I felt like dismissed me and referred to a primary care physician. Dr. Gustafson helped met with us and referred us to a CCRM Therapist who recommended I be put on a small dose of an antidepressant. I feel so much better and we are currently in our 2WW for our 2nd IUI with CCRM. Fingers crossed!
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Leslie is always great about communicating with us in a timely manner. Every time we meet with her, she is very compassionate and helpful.
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr. Gustofson has been extremely helpful and answers all our questions in a timely and well described manner. I was referred to this doctor as my friend saw him and he ended up diagnosing her with Ovarian Cancer, but worked to get her grants to freeze her eggs for after her cancer battle. He's a great guy and doctor!
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Do your own research, but trust this doctor!
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
For our first IUI, we used clomid, ovidrel and estrogen. However, that was unsuccessful so for this second one, the doctor recommended I take the clomid for longer. This was beneficial with helping my follicles grow, however thinned my uterine lining a great deal. To fix that, I was put on estrogen vaginally three times a day, which was a miracle drug and increased my lining from 3.5 to 7.7!
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
Fertility expenses are obviously not cheap. But, I standby the idea that you get what you pay for. Our insurance does not cover any fertility aspects, so we work to pay for everything on our own.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Minjarez is wonderful, when I can see her. She remembers the details of my story, talks me through decisions that need to be made, gives me numbers, and is generally very warm. The nursing staff, however, leaves much to be desired. I've worked with three nurses in 2.5 years. The first couldn't remember any details about my case (like that I am a single mother by choice) and would call in prescriptions for me for meds I was allergic to. The second nurse was excellent; I learned to ask more questions, which helped, but she knew me well and would stay on top of things. The nurse I am working with now is terrible: she never initiates contact, is not ahead of my calendar so leaves things until the last minute, and isn't creative in helping me deal with problems - if there isn't a stock response, then there is nothing she can do for me.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I have had three very different nurses. First: she left in 2014, but was disorganized, forgot any details about me and my history, and would call in scripts for meds I was allergic to. Katie P: Excellent. She is a good communicator, was organized (she would email me the day before I had to start or change a med), always returned calls and emails within an hour, and genuinely cared about me. Kristi: My nurse now. The only positive is that she responds to my emails very quickly. She is disorganized, doesn't remember any details about me or my history, and is not at all thoughtful or creative when she responds to my questions - if it's not a pre-written CCRM response, she doesn't know what to say.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Lost paperwork

How was your experience with Debra Minjarez?
Dr. Minjarez is very warm, and very smart. My only complaint is that when I look back over the 2.5 years I have been under her care, there are things I wish someone would have explained to me when I started the process, that I feel like I didn't learn until much later in the process.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Debra Minjarez?
Ask questions; don't assume she or her staff will tell you everything you need to know; and know that there are always more drugs, more procedures, and more options, and you need to know your limits.
Describe the protocols Debra Minjarez used in your cycles and their degree of success.
None of my cycles have resulted in a pregnancy 2 IUIs with no drugs 4 IUIs with varying amounts of drugs. I know Clomid was used a couple times, I don't remember the others. 1 IVF retrieval: Luteal Oral Protocol 3 - Estrace, Cetrotide, Menopur, Gonal, Saizen, Dexamethasone. We CCS tested the 6 embryos and all were abnormal. I am now prepping for my first donor egg / donor sperm transfer. I will have taken: Novarel (birth control), Lupron, Vivelle, Endometrin, Progesterone in Oil, and Medrol.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
Overall the clinic was great. It gets results for many and is known for treating older difficult patients. I needed a clinic that would be honest with my issues and truly help. I would say is the best in there US. When I first arrived there were couples from all over the world in the lobby waiting for their day to begin. It is a little more expensive than other clinics with for IVF but with all the testing you know you are getting a perfect embryo. My perfect embryo made me a first time mom in September and I will forever be grateful for CCRM. They helped us start a family.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Schoolcraft and CCRM spent time answering my questions and helping me solve my infertility problems that other clinics could not
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Melanie was amazing. She was responsive and compassionate.
How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
Dr Schoolcraft is a pioneer in his field. He is direct in his treatment and he gets results. He is not a warm and fuzzy doctor but was the only one able to get me to retrieval on first round without overstimulating me and resulted in my first child. I cannot day enough good things about his work, his clinic and the support I received from his staff especially being an out of state patient.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
Don’t be turned off if he is not warm. He states the facts and is honest with his treatment recommendations. His plans get young results.
Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I did IVF and the protocol included antagonist treatment. I don’t recall the exact medications but took a few days longer to trigger. For transfer they used a Lupron medication that was administered 2 months in advance to help with my endometriosis.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. M is very caring and warm. I really like her even though I have not received the results I want. She listens to my concerns and let's me have an opinion in my treatment whole marrying that with her deep expertise. The only downside is that I don't deal with her a lot. I like the nurse I deal with but could see the experience being deeply influenced by what caliber of nurse you have. There are some expensive tests that seem repetitive or an young that they have to be run through their lab (aka not under insurace unless you have United)
Describe your experience with your nurse.
She is on top of of everything and calls me back immediately. When she's out she makes sure I am covered. Some of the other nurses who cover for her don't seem quite as on top of it. Christina is calm, knowledgeable and authoritative which helps me trust her though I think she is better than most of the others based on when she is out.
How was your experience with Debra Minjarez?
She is fantasist and warm. She makes the process very informative and less emotionally difficult. My nurse acts as the liaison though I wish I could talk to her more.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Debra Minjarez?
Don't wait, I wish I went earlier for emotional sanity. Go immediately, figure out what is and is not covered by your insurance and speak up to what you think is and is not working. I have a food allergy present in all of the pill medications and possibly responsible for my multiple losses so she completely customized my transfer after my last loss. She listens and, especially if you push, is open to trying anything that she thinks might help and poses little risk.

They are very responsive and helpful with all of your questions and concerns. I was treated like my case was very important the entire time I was being treated.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Her "bedside manner" gave me the sense that she truly cared about our personal infertility journey, how it impacts us from a whole-person (not just physical) perspective, and that she wanted to see us succeed.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I really appreciated having one.l nurse assigned to me that was familiar with my face and case. However, Erica left CCRM during my treatment and I was reassigned. Some of the nurses made the IUI procedure more comfortable than others. I especially liked the nurse that used IUI with sonogram to help guide.

How was your experience with Sara Barton?
Based on a diagnosis of unexplained infertility, and a relatively good prognosis, we have not yet met very often with Dr Barton, but in our few interactions she seemed caring, determined to put us on a path towards live birth and seemed to handle my course of treatments through the 3 IUIs as I expected.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Sara Barton?
She makes me really comfortable discussing the tough topics related to infertility.
Describe the protocols Sara Barton used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We did ovarian stimlation with clomid (100 mcg) for 3 cycles on cycle days 3-7. Beginning with Ultrasound to check for cysts prior to beginning medication each cycle. Follicle check ultrasounds on approx cycle day 10-12. Triggered ovulation with Ovidrel for IUI scheduled 36 hours after trigger. Semen collection was scheduled for 2 hours prior to IUI. When lining was less than 7mm at follicle check, vaginal Estrace was given to help with uterine lining, and continued until 2 weeks after ovulation. No pregancy was achieved through these 3 cycles.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Sara Barton.
Approximately $1,000 per IUI cycle including all medications (nothing covered by insurance). Diagnostic work and appointments with dr were also around $1,000.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
I have no complaints. Their strengths are being organized, usually getting early to an appointment means I'm in and out earlier than expected. Everyone's helpful and the facility is clean.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I had my diagnosis of endometriosis prior to coming to CcRM. We tried 3 IUI's, all failed, and every time I ovulated too quickly. They didn't seem to try anything outside of their typical protocol and my 3rd iui was canceled due to missing ovulation. Now that we're moving on to IVF, I asked Dr schoolcraft why he chose my protocol and he said "bc it will give you your best chance of success." While that's an obvious reason to choose a protocol, I'd like to know WHY he's chosen this particular one and what they expect the results or process to be. My nurse has been the main reason I feel like a number, every time I speak to her in person or over the phone, she asks me to remind her of our situation. Once, she told me 10 minutes of someone else's health issues before I realized she wasn't talking about me. We're local to CCRM and I've heard they're great so I'm trying to look past all of this.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Staff is great but my nurse has been difficult to work with. She's unorganized, usually uninformed and somewhat checked out. I've met other great nurses but haven't asked to be switched since I don't want to ruffle any feathers.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call with results
How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
I'm not sure what his strengths are as we're currently in treatment, weakness is probably compassion/lack of emotion. I don't need emotion but I know some people do. He also isn't a big talker and people need to bring questions to him to get answers.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
Ask any and all questions, be prepared, do research to be able to have questions.
Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
1 iui with clomid and ovudril, switched to letrozole no trigger for last 2 IUI's. Clomid increased my cramping due to 4 follicles growing, letrozole gave me 1 follicle each time but sped up ovulation. Just received IVF protocol, priming with Doxycycline, cetrotide, estrogen patches. Stimming with cetrotide, gonal-f, menopur, and triggering with pregnyl and Lupron. No reasons were really given for any of them other than they should be successful.
Describe the costs associated with your care under William Schoolcraft.
So far we've spent about 15,000 in IUI's and testing. IVF with icsi will be 34,000.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
Strengths: great reputation for lab in terms of embryo develolment, etc. This was my personal experience and I got better results with these cycles than the first one I did at another clinic. They also do lots of PGS testing, so very confident in their ability to handle embryos well. Compared to what I've read, they seem to be at the forefront of IVF advances. It's a big clinic, but I did not feel like a number. Mostly pleasant front staff, excellent nurses and ultrasound techs, and excellent OR nurses. Procedures all went smoothly with great anesthesia management. Another strength was the reaching out to out of towners for support groups which I found extremely helpful. Great counsellors/psychologists running the groups. Weakness: very expensive. More so than my first clinic.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Caring, knowledgeable, warm personality. Took time to answer all my questions.

First nurse I had was not great. She did not return calls until the end of the day consistently and more importantly, I did not feel she really cared about my case. However, I got assigned a new nurse (Julie) as my first one left. Julie was excellent in every way.
How was your experience with Eric Surrey?
Seemed to read through and use my previous results from another clinic and apply it clinically. However, I had very few setbacks, and so it is not possible for me to comment on how things would have gone if they did not go as planned. He recommended doing banked embryos as I had DOR, and this was expensive but turned out to be the best thing for me in the end. Technically, all of the procedures he performed (hysteroscopy, retrieval, FET), went very smoothly and painlessly (given meds for retrieval and mild meds for FET, but not hysteroscopy). I felt confident in his opinion and trusted the course that we took.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Surrey?
None specific.
Describe the protocols Eric Surrey used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I believe we used the antagonist protocol. Used Gonal F and Menopur (300 and 150 daily) after using estrogen for some period of time. Trigger was with both Lupron and HCG. FET was with estrogen and PIO. Same protocol used all 3 times with similar results (did 3 retrievals within 5 months or so to bank embryos to have enough for PGS testing).
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Surrey.
Egg retrieval (included 3) plus one FET: $45,000 Medications: about $18,000 (for 3 cycles) Travel/accommodations: about $10,000 One day work up (prior to starting retrievals): ?3000

I felt like she could have been a bit more friendly or involved, but I know she also has a lot of patients, so it's very hard. There was some issue early on in my treatment. Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
CCRM is a large clinic. That is a strength and may be seen as a weakness to some. You are not going to get a ton of 1:1 time with your doctor. And there may be times you have to remind your doctor or nurse of something. You need to be your own advocate and ask a lot of questions and point out anything that seems weird to you. But, they are among the best in this field and they always made me feel comfortable. The nurses and front-desk staff are so nice and friendly. I went to the Rose location in Denver and the woman (Ruby) who took my blood was phenomenal. She rarely left a mark, was always super quick, but most important was so nice. Her smile was the best in the middle of this terrible infertility journey. As long as you know what you are getting into with a large clinic, I think it's a fantastic place to be treated. I would never hesitate to recommend it to anyone needing treatment. And honestly, with how large it is, I think it would be possible for them to be WAY more impersonal than they are. They did a great job of making me feel valued and important when I was talking to someone.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I recognize that Dr. Surrey wouldn't know my details if we ran into each other on the street, but every time he talked to my husband and myself it felt like he was talking directly to us and our situation. I didn't feel like he was giving us canned responses or recommendations. In addition, when we went through an ectopic pregnancy, he treated us with compassion and understanding. Like he truly cared.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Katie was nice and helped me through the steps. She returned calls and answered questions. I felt like she could have been a bit more friendly or involved, but I know she also has a lot of patients, so it's very hard. There was some issue early on in my treatment. I had a Nurse (Kim) who was nice enough. She ended up leaving though and while I was notified she left, I was never notified of who my nurse was going to be. There was never an appt. set up so I could meet my new nurse or anything like that. I felt lost for a little while which was not a fun feeling.
How was your experience with Eric Surrey?
Dr. Surrey was fantastic. To some degree I think he took a bit for granted that my husband and I knew or understood more than we did at times, but if we asked him to slow down or asked questions, he was quick to adjust. Again, I knew that Eric Surrey didn't know me personally, but when we were meeting with him, it felt like we were the patients that mattered and that he was well versed in our specific situations. In terms of my expectations around meeting with a doctor at a large clinic, Dr. Surrey exceeded them in every way.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Surrey?
Write down questions ahead of time or as you are given explanations and don't be afraid to ask them. There's no reason to leave an appt. with Dr. Surrey unclear about next steps or anything he said.
Describe the protocols Eric Surrey used in your cycles and their degree of success.
For IUIs, I believe the drug protocol was Letrozole + Trigger Shot + Progesterone suppositories. He preferred letrozole to Clomid because I had been on Clomid prior to the IUIs and did not see success. For the Egg Retrieval, I struggle to remember the exact drugs I took, but it was a fairly standard starting point...I don't think anything was specifically custom to my situation, since we were unexplained. For the Transfer, I started with a bit of birth control. I then moved onto using a steroid pill of some sort I think. For the bulk of it, I was on Progesterone Suppositories (twice a day), Estrogen Patches (worked up to 4 patches every other day), and Progesterone In oil injections (0.5 units) every other day. After labs were drawn at some point, they decided to increase the PIO injection to 1 unit every other day, and add in estrogen pills.

It was a lot. CCRM is expensive and everything was out of pocket. I honestly have no idea what the total was.

[Nursing staff at CCRM were] Very poor communicators. Unable to get ahold of my assigned nurse directly. Would take 2-3 messages over 1-2 days to get a call back. Lacked empathy with negative test results - left voicemails and then just referred us to the in house counselor. When cycle was cancelled last minute put blame on us for something they missed. Would say they would call to set up next cycle or next re-group and never called.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
Very nice and fancy building. Have a Central Denver Office - but Dr. isn't there very often so have to drive to the suburbs for most of your care. Care costs more than other clinics and it appears a lot of that money is going towards a fancy building.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Very busy clinic where support staff didn't know patients very well. Felt like you were part of a factory walking from one part to the next without individualization

How was your experience with Eric Surrey?
Dr. Surrey had good bedside manner, however it felt like he just applied the same plan to you without actually reviewing your history. For example was not clear of the medications I had taken during a previous cycle and had to stop half way through describing next steps because it changed the plan. Seemed to do extensive labs that weren't always indicated. Didn't know whether he had prescribed trigger shots or not.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Surrey?
Make sure you are aware of each step and ask lots of questions. Question why you are doing things and review everything without assuming that he is aware of previous or current treatment.
Describe the protocols Eric Surrey used in your cycles and their degree of success.
1) IUI with clomid and ovedrel. Dr. Surrey felt the work up didn't explain our infertility enough, so that starting with less invasive would be okay. Produced a chemical pregnancy - ?maybe. He called it a chemical pregnancy and ordered more labs then as we were starting the next cycle remembered I did a trigger shot and that could have explained the very very low b-hcg. 2) Repeat same plan. Negative

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Gustofson is incredibly kind and caring. He took as much time as was needed to explain each step of the process and answer all of our questions. He gave us his email and was quick to respond to any questions that I sent to him. He understands first hand the stresses and concerns involved in infertility treatment and provides both a scientific and empathetic approach to care.

How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
He is empathetic and knowledgable. At the end of the day, there is so much that we don't understand about infertility, so he explains the boundaries of knowledge, sets expectations, provides a personalized experience and stays with you through the ups and downs of treatment.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Work with him, you won't regret it.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
My diagnosis was advanced maternal age. I followed the Linear Antagonist with testosterone priming protocol, which resulted in 6 embroys, 4 of which were CCS normal. I also have a blood clotting disorder, although he did not feel this caused either of my miscarriages since they were before 20 weeks. My first FET resulted in a chemical pregnancy, so we added the antihistamine protocol. Second FET was a BFN. At this point Dr. G asked if I would want to consider a gestational carrier. When we asked if we could try a third transfer with a more natural approach, he was supportive instead of pushing us down the GC path. The third "natural" transfer worked and resulted in our son.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
Overall, we spend about $65K on fertility treatments

Dr Deb knew my chart and everything we had experienced until then... she knew my acupuncturist and my OB, and would send them notes because they both were involved, etc - she just knew "me" and I never felt like numbers on her page. She also knew how I responded to news, and at time altered the way she delivered news. She even sat rubbing my hand and wiping tears as she took me in for surgery to remove my tubes, she connected with you.

How was your experience with Debra Minjarez?
Although I was bummed not to see her again once I was pregnant (I only saw her 2 other times - my only less positive thing to say, you never see her), I never doubted her commitment to my fertility for a second. Even in a world of infertility and reoccurring bad news that is often delivered and managed by your nurse, she called me after certain less than positive result tests to make sure I was ok. I was young and had a pretty serious case and I will never forget her making me a promise that first day, she was dedicated and compassionate.. When I didn't respond to stims in the beginning of my cycle, she reassured me of my progress and made me feel comfortable with my medication switch mid-cycle. Again it would have been really nice just to a get a call or note from her after pregnancy or delivery, it was radio silent from her after my transfer, otherwise I couldn't speak more highly of Dr Deb!
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Debra Minjarez?
Get a good nurse.
Describe the protocols Debra Minjarez used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Retrieval - CCRM Protocol 3, estrogen priming, with added clomid day 4 after poor response. Stimmed 13 days and had double trigger. Transfer - 2 months depo lupron prior to CCRM standard frozen transfer. I have stage IV endometriosis, that caused both tubes to close as well as luteal phase defect and DOR (RFC 4-6, AMH .4) due to scarring on ovaries. I had to have my tubes removed prior to transfer but after retrieval. I had historically not responded to stims. I have never had a successful pregnancy and was Beta-3 negative. My retrieval was saved by clomid, I responded and had 14 eggs retrieved, 11 were mature, 9 fertilized and 4 made it to Day 6, 5 day 6. Depo Lupron successfully helped my body create the beta-3. I had a successful transfer of 2 day 5 (3AA and 5AA) untested embryos.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Debra Minjarez.
All said and done for one day workup, one retrieval, drugs for one retrieval, surgery to remove my tubes, transfer, drugs for one frozen transfer, blood work and associated tests we spent $40k. The package prices are not all inclusive, everything is upcharged that can be.

NUrsing staff [at CCRM Denver] was always busy. I had one bad experience during an IUI, in which a new intern I hadn't met was allowed to insert the speculum. It took her minutes of jabbing around and hitting my cervix repeatedly, and I eventually in tears asked her to stop. Someone else was brought in, and the rest of it went smoothly, but I was so upset and in pain. No one apologized, and I was left to feel really awkward. It often felt like the nurse didn't know my name or remember what my specifics were; I was constantly having to remind them of my unusually short ovulation cycle, and it was in my chart, and yet the nurses kept giving me wrong instructions for taking medication and scheduling appointments.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
Clean, a bit sterile, things generally move on time. Pretty flexible for patients who work (they would make an exception and schedule early appointments ~7am for bloodwork and routine exams for those of us with early morning meetings).
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Changed nurses often, and felt like they barely knew my name. Also changed doctors midstream. Everyone was kind and knowledgeable, but I certainly didn't feel acknowledged as a person. Also, when I had my first unsuccessful cycle, I was a real mess, even weeks later. The staff knew it, and multiple nurses and my doctor said they would have their staff psychiatrist set up a time with me to make sure I was okay. I never heard from anyone, and I was too depressed/ashamed to make an appointment myself. I am glad that in the end I didn't hurt myself or suffer longlasting depression, but that could have easily been a result and I feel now that they were a bit negligent in knowing what they knew and not following through.

It often felt like the nurse didn't know my name or remember what my specifics were; I was constantly having to remind them of my unusually short ovulation cycle, and it was in my chart, and yet the nurses kept giving me wrong instructions for taking medication and scheduling appointments. I also did not like that nurses would only call with medication dosage and timing instructions. They wouldn't email them. This led to a particularly bad IVF cycle (my first) in which I couldn't' remember the final dosage of HCG and couldn't find anyone who could tell me what it was in the middle of the night; the night nurse instructed me to take the wrong dosage. This was the night before my egg retrieval. They were still able to retrieve eggs, but a significant number were not mature and I still wonder if this is due to the incorrect dosage I took. Had the nurse emailed me or written instructions down, this would not have happened. As it was, she called me when I was out at the grocery store without pen/paper, and she still told me the exact times and dosages for five different medicines across a 3 day period, didn't repeat them, and hung up. I had to then try to remember exactly and write them down in my phone, and couldn't remember the final dosage. So all in all, while the staff is generally professional and competent, they could use some improvement in coordinating care.

How was your experience with Debra Minjarez?
Nice and knowledgeable. I didn't feel like the course of treatment was specific to me, but was instead a standard cookie cutter approach. Also, after all my testing, I was never handed an officially-named diagnosis, so I believed for months that it was 'unidentified infertility.' It wasn't until after I had been getting treatment for 1.5 years there and was discussing starting IVF with Dr Minjarez that I asked about its success rates with unidentified infertility. She casually looked at me and said, "it's not unidentified; you have 'diminished ovarian reserve'." I was shocked - those words had never been said to me. It didn't really change anything moving forward for IVF, but still felt.... wrong, after all the thousands of dollars and tests and hours spent with staff there. I also wouldn't have pursued 3 rounds of IUI had I known that.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Debra Minjarez?

While we really liked our doctor, we were very very disappointed with the CCRM clinic. Here, we felt like a number. After our initial consult with Dr. Minjarez, we had to go through the official orientation process, which was a wasted day for us. They herded us together with about 10 other couples into a conference room, and went through the general IVF process, legal stuff, protocol..... none of which was helpful in the least to us. It put a bad taste in our mouths from the get-go. They are very protocol driven. The worst example I can think of is that prior to our first IVF transfer, both my husband and I had to go through all sorts of very costly testing, some of which was communicable disease testing which is understandable. But after our first attempt failed, they wanted us to do the exact same testing all over again a mere 2 months later when we went to do transfer #2. They said they would not do the transfer if we didn't do the tests again (all through the CCRM labs, of course). The lab staff was wonderful. I had countless blood draws, and they were all very talented (I am a difficult draw) and friendly. Ruby at the

Same with ultrasound technicians - they were all very nice and had their acts together.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Specifically with Dr. Minjarez, I felt like a human because she treated both me and my husband with respect, she answered all of our questions no matter how many times we asked them, and I felt that she was very adept at sensing whether we needed warm fuzzies or down and dirty facts (that varied greatly depending on what stage of the process we were at).
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Primary nurse was ok, but especially for our first IVF round, she assumed that we were already familiar with the protocols, drugs, acronyms, procedures, etc. When you are going through this process, the last thing you want to do is figure out the basics on your own. There were several calendar mistakes made along the way where I felt that I had to double check absolutely everything. Before we began our first cycle, she would talk about the "Calendar" like it was a big magical thing, and when I got it, I was very disappointed and confused. It was a photocopied piece of paper with dates handwritten in and notes in the columns. It used terms like "LMP" which I was not familiar with. Instead of using the term "luprolide acetate" (which was what the pharmacy called it), it referred to "Lupron", which I believe is the brand name of the drug. This all sounds really nit-picky, but for someone going through infertility and uncertainty and nervousness, it would have been so much more reassuring to have everything spelled out for us in a clear, precise and unmistakable manner. Communication was difficult in that we did not have a way to directly contact our nurse - had to either leave a message via their portal or leave a message in the general nurses mailbox.

How was your experience with Debra Minjarez?
We felt that Dr. Minjarez knew her stuff - seems to be a very intelligent person. As I had already been through several failed IUI attempts with a different clinic, we had some very frank conversations with Dr. Minjarez about 1) the probability that my egg quality was likely poor based on my age and hormone levels (since I had done no retrievals, there was no way to know for sure), and 2) our financial situation and how it would realistically direct my treatment to some degree. She did NOT push us to use donor eggs, but was also realistic and honest about the likelihood of my own eggs being viable. Dr. Minjares was always friendly and willing to go over our plan time and again with us as things changed. Personally, I liked her very much and felt very comfortable with her.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Debra Minjarez?
Don't be afraid to slow her down. She is obviously a very busy person, and sometimes we felt a bit rushed in our appointments with her (not the transfer), but we learned to ask our questions until we understood everything.
Describe the protocols Debra Minjarez used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We went straight to using an egg donor since we knew sperm were healthy and were pretty confident that eggs were not. FET #1 Birth control, Lupron injections, estrogen patches, progesteron in oil injections, progesteron inserts, mild antibiotics prior to transfer and a few other drugs I don't remember. I did pre and post-transfer acupuncture for both transfers. Donor gave us 12 frozen eggs, 10 fertilized and we transfered one day-5 embryo and froze the remaining 9 embryos. Result was negative pregnancy test. FET #2 we thawed and transfered 2 embryos which resulted in twins! FET #2 was 2 day-5 embryos from same batch as

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
CCRM has a fantastic embryology laboratory and uses the most up-to-date technology available. It is more expensive than many other clinics, but as a local patient, I wanted to go to the best clinic. CCRM is fairly corporate, and especially at the Lone Tree location, one feels a bit like a number in a giant organization. During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Minjarez was warm and informative. She gave us the information we needed and worked to tailor our plan of treatment and gave us thoughtful advice. She did my retrieval and my transfers. I highly recommend her, though she is no longer with CCRM.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Ms. Lyons was a very good nurse, and I loved having one nurse with whom to communicate. Other nurses not familiar with my course of treatment often did not give us accurate information; however, when there was a mix-up of our medication for trigger, the nurses worked very hard after hours to track down the right medications.

How was your experience with Debra Minjarez?
As I said, Dr. Minjarez was extremely compassionate and warm. She was also attuned to our problems and adjusted our course of treatment based on issues encountered along the way. Dr. Minjarez gave us all the information, but when asked, she gave us her best recommendation.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Debra Minjarez?
I would say that you can count on her to be informed and offer good advice, but of course you should do your own research and ask her all the questions you can.
Describe the protocols Debra Minjarez used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We did the agonist/antagonist cycle with ICSI/IMSI and freeze-all. We ended up with 4 3-day embryos. Our first FET of 2 embryos failed. Our second was successful with a singleton boy being born healthy and full term. The rationale for our protocol was that my husband has severe male factor and I have PCOS. I was 31 at the time, so Dr. M did not recommend doing CCS/PGS testing.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Debra Minjarez.
I believe we paid between $30,000 and $35,000 total for 1 cancelled retrieval, 1 successful retrieval, 1 failed FET, and 1 successful FET, including medications.

I loved all of the nurses that I worked with at CCRM. I am a busy working executive and couldn't always speak freely when they would call. My nurse was aware of this, so she would follow-up with an email to be sure I got my dose information since I couldn't ask questions if I was in front of my staff. Happy with my care and happy with the result!
How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
Dr. Schoolcraft and CCRM-Colorado are the best in the nation. I have recommended both friends and family as patients to him and his partners. Dr. Schoolcraft was very clear with my results and my options to move forward; he gave me all my options and then made a recommendation. I am happy that I moved forward with egg freezing and knowing that when I'm ready I have 19 eggs frozen and waiting for me.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
Review the binder materials, come prepared with your questions, and utilize Dr. Schoolcraft's nurses. It is easy to become overwhelmed during the process and being prepared help me gain control and ownership of my infertility treatment.
Describe the costs associated with your care under William Schoolcraft.

I felt the nurses [at CCRM Colorado-Denver] supporting IUI were quite cold and dismissive but once I got into IVF it was a completely different environment... the nurses were significantly better on the IVF side of things...It was expensive. I think that the least costly was the embryo transfer and those ran $5000 each. The retrieval was the huge figure obviously and it was around $15,000 plus some ancillary medicines as well...My impression was that they don't take IUI patients as seriously.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
My impression was that they don't take IUI patients as seriously. It's obviously a less committed and less costly procedure as well. From an IVF perspective I had complete faith in their competence and ability to manage my situation.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Minjarez is a warm and supportive person and genuinely interested in her patients. I felt the nurses supporting IUI were quite cold and dismissive but once I got into IVF it was a completely different environment. She was consistently a lovely person but the nurses were significantly better on the IVF side of things.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
My primary point person for IVF was Erin Quinn and she was wonderful. For IUI it was a less warm and fuzzy woman named Lisa in CCRM's Denver office. The other IVF nurses were incredible; one of whom drove 40 minutes up from the suburbs on a Sunday to help me with drugs. I am embarrassed to say I cannot recall her name but I also think Erin said she left CCRM the following year anyway. But it was that type of place. Ruby who did blood draw was hilarious and amazing at find veins and the woman who staffed the U/S was equally nice. I really felt that the IVF was a supportive environment, unlike the early IUI experience.
How was your experience with Debra Minjarez?
Strength- when I did see her for a consultation or an inspection (HSG, etc) she was patient and really gave attention. She was also smart and encouraging. She has a lovely demeanor with patients and really seems to genuinely care whether the process works or not. To this day- my twins are nearly five- I send her annual cards at her new clinic in California to keep her apprised of the children's doings. She also made the effort to carve out time to meet the twins when they were several months old.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Debra Minjarez?
It's a very, very long process and you might have other practitioners doing things like retrievals on her behalf. I didn't mind but I know some people do.
Describe the protocols Debra Minjarez used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I don't have vivid recollections except that she clearly changed the dosing on the retrieval drugs between my first and second tries. She was very helpful in urging me to do another retrieval as, at the time, I only had one remaining healthy embryo. She explained that with my condition- PCOS- she now could see how I react to the medicines and she increased dosages. Having said that, the number of eggs I produced was doubled from 11 to 22 and it was an extremely painful recuperation after the retrieval so it was probably an aggressive treatment in terms of hyperstimulation risk. But the clinic was top notch and, compared to what I've heard from peers who used others, they were on touch of the medicine and blood testing constantly so I felt it was all very controlled and managed.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Debra Minjarez.
It was expensive. I think that the least costly was the embryo transfer and those ran $5000 each. The retrieval was the huge figure obviously and it was around $15,000 plus some ancillary medicines as well. Obviously some of that depends on one's health coverage. My company at that time did not cover IVF at all. As I was completing my process in fall 2011 they were bringing in some type of buy one get one free insurance thing but I was too late to participate in those.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
The billing and back office is horrendous. If it weren't for my near constant follow up, I don't think we would of been paid back or gotten proper claims to insurance. Furthermore, check your insurance policy - CCRM has a "policy" to require prepayment, or what they think your co-pay amount is (even if you've met your deductible and out of pocket max) and in same cases is outside of their contract with the insurance company. Causes a lot of additional work when you're already dealing with the emotional side of getting pregnant.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Barton takes the time to answer your questions, I never once felt rushed when I was meeting with her
Describe your experience with your nurse.
The entire nursing staff at CCRM, including lab people are awesome - and really what make CCRM. You will rarely if ever talk to your doctor, and don't expect them to be the one to do your procedures as they rotate through. However, each and every nurse or lab were awesome to be with. After seeing them day after day during stims you start to build a great relationship.
How was your experience with Sara Barton?
I came to Dr Barton and CCRM after failed IUI's and feeling less than important at another local Denver clinic. I don't think we were a typically challenging case for CCRM, but Dr Barton took the time to review our options and discuss our diagnosis with us. I was lucky enough that I had Dr Barton on the day of transfer and she made me feel at ease and explained what was occurring.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Sara Barton?
Even though she hasn't been at the clinic a long time, give her the chance to be your doctor. There is a reason she's at one of the best clinics in the US and is easy to get appointments with!
Describe the protocols Sara Barton used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Was on CCRM protocol 3 (no BC, primed with cetrotide). Had a diagnosis of DOR, so drugs were increased over the stim period as expected. Husband has a small morphology problem so we did ICSI and IMFI. Resulted in 5 embroyo's, and currently 28 weeks with twin girls.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Sara Barton.
With medication, and procedures (including one day workup), we spent just under $35K for one IVF cycle. We are local and did not have added travel costs with that.

This clinic [CCRM] is extremely well organized. You do kind of feel like just a number at times because it is like a factor - HOWEVER, my doctor and nurse have not given off this feeling. The location is very easy to find and everything is in ONE building which is great for the embryos. The weaknesses include the higher price and the fact that there lab only takes one insurance. I have to pay everything out of pocket and it is getting very expensive.

He is very attentive and answers all questions. I have also been in contact with my nurse who contacts him and gets answers very quickly. He also manages all of his own patients even though he is in a large group of physicians.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I absolutely love my nurse. She is totally on top of it and always returns my phone calls the day of. She has also explained the protocols to me and the thinking behind meds etc. If she is every unsure of something, she contacts DR Surrey and gets me a definite answer. She is really a great nurse.
How was your experience with Eric Surrey?
He reviewed my previous IVF cycle and tried to make it better for my second try. We are currently doing a third IVF and he has completely changed the protocol which is good. I am hoping for better results. He has always been very friendly and has a great sense of humor.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Surrey?
He is very direct and sure of what he wants to proceed with and that is something that I appreciate. On the other hand, he is also open to suggestions in the protocol and always listened to what I had to say.
Describe the protocols Eric Surrey used in your cycles and their degree of success.
The first IVF cycle with him was my second overall. I was on a normal responder protocol with suppression using birth control pills for one month, followed by stims (Gonal f, menopur, dexamethasone and cetrotide) I had a double trigger with that cycle. We retrieved 9 eggs, 4 mature, 2 blasts, one normal per testing. My first cycle we had 12 eggs, 4 mature and non were normal....so the second cycle was an improvement. I am about to undergo my third retrieval in 3-4 weeks.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Surrey.
Initial work up is around 4,000-5,000 dollars 23,000 for first IVF cycle - includes PGS testing 15,000 for second IVF cycle - includes PGS testing

We have moved on to another clinic [from CCRM] who has taken very good care of us and we have already had signs of more success. After some time, I plan to contact the patient advocate at CCRM to explain the MANY mistakes that were made. It breaks my heart thinking about the way they treat couples and women and I hope what happened to us never happens to anyone else.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
A money-making machine that pushes donor egg and sperm to boost their numbers.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
She frequently confused information. She had never read our chart when we went to meet with her. She made many mistakes. We only met with her 3 times. She refused to admit she made mistakes.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
It's hard to blame the nurses because they are underpaid, overworked and not trained. I never had one nurse - I spoke to several who frequently made mistakes.

How was your experience with Laxmi Kondapalli?
At first I was thrilled to have her as a doctor. She was energetic and fun. It became clear very quickly that she made many mistakes - we had to correct her. She misdiagnosed and recommended the wrong protocols. She pushed donor sperm despite the fact that we said repeatedly we did not want that. We met with her 3 times. After our last attempt, we refused to meet with her because of her complete lack of care.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Laxmi Kondapalli?
See another doctor.
Describe the protocols Laxmi Kondapalli used in your cycles and their degree of success.
She first put me on an antagonist protocol, it produced a lot of eggs but my estrogen skyrocketed. The second protocol was the same but with estrogen priming. My estrogen hit almost 7,000. She refused to admit that it was the protocol and actually had the nerve to say, "we could change the protocol, what do you think we should do?"
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
This is a busy practice. I feel like they are too busy to provide care that is equal to the cost. I hear that they have good results but stress is an important factor in this process. I felt very stressed because I did t understand what was going on and when I asked questions, they seemed annoyed with me.

How was your experience with Eric Surrey?
There is very little communication with the Doctor. We left almost every appointment feeling confused and frustrated. We wanted to adjust our treatment plan and were unable to speak with the Doctor about it. Our concerns were never addressed.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Surrey?
You have to be an advocate for yourself. Push for the things you want and also make sure you are given accurate medications and you know what the medications do. Communication is a struggle with this practice.

CCRM can be very overwhelming. They have a remarkable reputation and that can sometimes be daunting. You expect miracles. A lot of times those miracles do happen and sometimes they don't or they take other means to happen. And sometimes even the best doctors can't know everything. And be okay with that....CCRM was very expensive. But their statistics spoke for themselves. I will never regret making the decision to go there.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
The clinic is very hands on. Relative to the other clinics I have been at, it is a fairly personalized experience, likely due at least in part to the number of non-local patients they see.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
The nursing staff was relatively good.
How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
The number of eggs retrieved relative to the number of follicles seen was very low (both in absolute and relative to my experience at other clinics). The fertilization rate and growth to day 6 blastocyst were also below my understanding of what is standard and what subsequently happened at other clinics. Lastly, it is unclear what the benefits of the extra medications used at CCRM are, given the similar yield to other clinics.

How was your experience with Jennifer Brown?
Dr Brown had a good bedside manner but just wasn't the right fit for me and my needs. I wanted a dr who took the whole body into account and would address my autoimmune issues in fertility treatment. She said she didn't think there was a connection between my infertility and auto-immune, and that's why I left her as a patient. In addition, I had to have 3 septum surgeries and she was not great at communicating the risk before having the first that I would have to have more than one due to the length of the septum. This led to a big let down after the first surgery - to find out I needed another and then another...
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Brown?
Ask for clarity about any risks/potential next steps before a surgery. Also, if you have other health issues that YOU believe are connected to infertility, I don't think she will be a good fit for you!

The nurses were poor communicators and could not relay or answer important questions. And the bottom line is the clinic's performance, meaning that they cherry pick cases to keep their numbers up...CCRM, where I briefly followed up with Dr. Kondapali after she moved, feels like an elitist, greedy place. The intake process was infuriating and insulting, the receptionists infuriating, and the nurses poor communicators and detached. Everyone says that CCRM has great doctors, but the administration of the clinic is a nightmare and it is the doctor's responsibility.

CCRM, where I briefly followed up with Dr.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I saw her at the University of Colorado Advanced Reproductive Medicine clinic in her capacity as an oncofertility specialist. She was very upbeat, kind and engagged.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Lost paperwork
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to convey critical information
How was your experience with Laxmi Kondapalli?
She is a great doctor, but she doesn't explain as much as I would like. In some cases, I don't think that I got to make decisions knowing all of the facts. In addition, she is very, very conservative in her advice. She may order every test on the planet, and doesn't seem aware in the least what the financial burden for the patient is. I suspect that at her new clinic, CCRM, she may also steer a borderline IVF candidate towards a donor before another doctor.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Laxmi Kondapalli?
If you have a complicated case and want a clearer briefing about your options, maybe use one of the other doctors in the practice.

A factory but a very good one! I'm from out of state and they had the process nailed... He [Dr. Schoolcraft] is extremely detail oriented and frankly anal. His thoroughness is absolutely what led to my ability to get pregnant after 2 years at another clinic that overlooked something structurally wrong with my uterus.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
A factory but a very good one! I'm from out of state and they had the process nailed. I have sent my friends with the hardest cases here, with extraordinary results. It isn't warm fuzzy, and it is expensive, but worth it to go to the best up front.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
It was a methodical place not too focused on bedside manner. But I didn't care-- I was there for results, not cuddles, and I didn't fault them for their need for efficiency
How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
He is extremely detail oriented and frankly anal. His thoroughness is absolutely what led to my ability to get pregnant after 2 years at another clinic that overlooked something structurally wrong with my uterus. He made me redo absolutely every test. I think that is why his results are so good. He isn't warm fuzzy but I was ok with that.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
Trust in his process. It works.
Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Fixed my uterine septum. Sent me home with a protocol for electro-acupuncture, which I had done per their instructions, and then while waiting for my IVF to start I managed to get pregnant and stay pregnant. Between fixing the septum and improving my lining through electro-acupuncture, it worked!!!

It's the full package! Customer service, most advanced medical technology and research, and a positive atmosphere.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
This is because of the support of the staff. I didn't have a ton of contact with Schoolcraft after my first initial phone conversation with him and my first day of appointments. I lived out of town and took advantage of the great system they have in place for out of town patients.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I wish I could remember my nurse coordinator, because she was fabulous! All of the nurses and other staff were great. I was always able to get in touch with someone and they always answered my questions.
How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
For someone with is national reputation, I was able to get an appointment pretty easily. He was honest and shared all information with me. He is not warm and fuzzy, but I didn't need that. I wanted results and got two beautiful girls!
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
If you are advanced maternal age, go with the genetic testing!
Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I had IVF and due to my age took advantage of the genetic testing that could be done with the embryos, then they were frozen.
Describe the costs associated with your care under William Schoolcraft.

How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
Excellent doctor and predicted exactly what would happen with cycles. Gave me good advice based on his extensive experience. Was candid which I appreciated. He was so very careful with cycles. I never worried if I was being watched or best decisions being made. He was, however, distant and rarely prepared when we spoke. This didn’t bother me bc I trusted him comeplety but it was a bit cold and lonely for my taste.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Nurses were friendly and caring. Schoolcraft is low on bedside manner but gets results. I got my warm fuzzier and education with resolve
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Just got it
How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
He gets results. At my age, I didn't have the time, money or physical or emotional reserves to do anything but take home a baby. He made that happen, whereas I don't believe my local doc or any other would have helped me be successful. Schoolcraft tailors protocol to your situation and modifies based on how you respond. Most doctors do the same protocol for everyone no matter what
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
Don't expect warmth and compassion. Engage organizations like RESOLVE or loved one. Educate yourself and advocate for yourself

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
She is extremely patient and has a wonderful personality so her bedside manner was comforting and jovial. She was supportive and encouraging even when we chose options that were not statistically promising.

Warm, friendly and always on time with next steps. Clear on all communications about protocols and prompt with answers to questions.
How was your experience with Vasiliki Moragianni?
We can't say enough positive things about our experience with Dr. Moragianni! After several unsuccessful IVF procedures at another popular fertility clinic in Northern Virginia, we decided to meet with Dr. Moragianni to see if she could offer us a different and more promising strategy. My husband and I are both in our mid and late forties so while we were very aware of the statistics, we still wanted to try everything. Dr. M spent an hour and a half with us during our first meeting and patiently explained all of our options in great detail but with warmth and care. It was such a wonderful experience that we immediately decided to start working with her. When we chose a path that was statistically not very promising, Dr. M was still extremely supportive and encouraging giving us the right amount of hope balanced with the facts. When that didn't work, we tried our next option and spent many months working with Dr. M to make our dreams a reality. In December of 2016, right before Christmas, we were told we were pregnant!!! She was as excited as we were and we enjoyed many special moments as we checked on our fetus and heard her heartbeat in early 2017. Our baby girl was born in August and we are overflowing with deep gratitude for all Dr. M did to bring her into this world. I will also add that as the primary patient, I am a bit high maintenance...lots of questions, lots of worries and a total wimp with medical procedures. Dr. M was so patient with me and used her charming personality to relax me and calm me down during some of the stressful episodes of our journey. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Moragianni to anyone trying to conceive via IVF. I believe our relationship with her and her expertise and knowledge was instrumental to our success.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Vasiliki Moragianni?
Enjoy a vastly different experience with her...as your trusted advisor, as your coach and as a caring professional.
Describe the protocols Vasiliki Moragianni used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I wish I could remember them all but I don't. I remember lots of shots and some pills during a stimulated cycle and then more shots and maybe some pills with preparing for a transfer.

How was your experience with Mark Payson?
Dr Payson is knowledgeable. He provides thorough explanations. His manner is patient and attentive. I went to him for a consultation and my experience was a very positive one. I don’t have any more to say and think it’s very silly that this form requires a minimum number of characters, which I apparently have not reached yet.

I froze my eggs five years ago. Based on my testing, Dr Payson recommended trying IVF with my current eggs before using the frozen ones because if the frozen ones were not successful, It would be several months later and the chance of success with my current eggs could be reduced.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
CCRM Louisville is a smaller more personable clinic than the other locations. We had to go to the other 2 locations for different procedures and it was a bit of a difference and I could see how people could feel not as appreciated at those locations. However altogether I was very pleased with how we were treated and the company was ran as a whole.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Gustofson was amazing to work with during this difficult part of our lives. He took the time to sit down and go over our options and get to know us. He is a genuine human being and you could tell he was actually interested in getting to know us and our situation.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
We had a pretty good experience with the nursing staff, no real issues.
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr. G was very thorough when it came to our treatment options. He is very genuine and personable and helped make this difficult process a lot easier on us. We ended up going back to see him to get pregnant with baby number 2 and would definitely recommend him to others.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
I know there are a few different Dr's to chose from within CCRM but I would definitely recommend using Dr. Gustofson. He will explain everything fully and is open to any questions.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
For the first pregnancy, we did 8 cycles of clomid and letrozole and 4 of those were IUI's the 4th one took. I only ovulate on one side because of my uterine malformation that's why there were cycles without an IUI. For the second pregnancy all it took was 1 cycle of Letrozole and 1 IUI and it took. We now have 2 beautiful babies thanks to the help of Dr. G and CCRM.

The clinic staff [at CCRM] for the most part is really good at what they do and very friendly and compassionate. I only had a few nurses that I didn't love, but for the most part everyone is amazing. They really make sure that you are fully informed every step of the way. We had appt's almost every day during our mock cycles and Stims and the sonographers always communicate what they see and you always sit down with a nurse after blood work and ultrasound to discuss results and next options which we appreciated not having to wait for phone calls. Our doctor always followed up with us personally and did all of our procedures which we appreciated also. The facilities are clean and well kept, warm and inviting.

Dr G has always called my husband and I personally with our results after egg retrieval, transfer, and he called us daily to check up after our surrogate was forced to terminate twins due to a cesarean scar implant. He has amazing bed side manner and went above and beyond with us.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
We have many friends that have gone to CCRM and loved the nurses. We got bounced around a little due to starting out ttc with me carrying and switching to a GC.
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
We have been patients since 2014 when we saw one of his competitors who we didn't feel had the bed side manner for us or our journey. I have secondary infertility, recently married, and my husband has never had a child of his own. Dr G took the time to get to know us and our situation and recognized the importance of us having a baby. He performed corrective surgery and gave me every chance to carry before we decided it would be best to use a gestational carrier. Our egg retrieval and transfer were successful and we would be due with twins October 4,2017 had one not implanted in our gc's c scar. Dr G has personally contacted us through every important step to give us results himself. We are continuing our journey with him and have 3 remaining embryos.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Be honest with him about your goals and he will be compassionate and help you through your journey
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We started with corrective operative hysteroscopy in 2014 followed by 3 ock cyckes to see if my lining would thicken. The mock cycle protocols resulted in getting my lining thick enough but I had New scar tissue form inside the uterus which we mutually decide it was time to use a GC. Our Stims and egg retrieval went flawlessly and resulted in 13 mature eggs, 9 fertilized, 8 made it for testing and 5 were genetically healthy. Our GC had some set backs, we could not complete her work up until she was 1 year PP, and had 2 periods after stopping nursing. She then had to lose enough weight to have a BMI of under 30 to proceed to FET protocol which also went flawlessly. Our transfer went off without a hitch, both embryos thawed perfectly and were hatching which resulted in a twin pregnancy.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
For Stims and egg retrieval the cost was around $14,000 not including medication, and for our GC frozen transfer including her one day work up and testing was about $13,500.

You don't always get to speak to your assigned nurse [at CCRM], but overall I've had a good experience with most of the nurses I've interacted with. I didn't run into any problems with communicating - everyone emails or calls back in a short amount of time. And for the most part, the nurses all have positive attitudes, which makes a huge difference given how difficult and emotional this process is...I think the initial testing was $4K; we spent around $5-6K on three IUIs. We spent about $50-60K for two rounds of IVF/ICSI/CCS and one FET (including medications).

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
CCRM is one of the best in the business and is a well-oiled machine. I rarely feel like "just a number." This may be because I go to the Louisville clinic, which is smaller and less "fertility industrial complex" seeming than the Lone Tree office. This is the only clinic I've been to, so I don't have much to compare it to. However, based on things my friends have said about their experiences with other clinics, I think CCRM does a particularly good job of managing expectations. You will have to undergo all of their testing even if you've done some of it before. This is part of the well-oiled machine piece. And, they won't start treatment until all testing is done. This felt a little frustrating at first, but I respect that they want to be thorough before they decided on treatment options. The main issue I've had with the Louisville office is going in for blood draws. For example, I would call and let them know I needed my thyroid levels re-checked and schedule an appointment. When I got there, the phlebotomist was prepared to test for something other than my TSH. What was happening is that the receptionist just scheduled "blood draw" and then the nurses were guessing what I might need given my chart and calendar, and they didn't always guess right. Any time you get a blood draw, be sure to check the label that it's for the right thing! I know this issue has been brought up, but I'm still running into this problem. The best solution is to tell the receptionist to make a "phone note" about what the blood draw is for and then double-check the blood draw label when you go in.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. G is a very nice man and a good doctor. He acknowledges the emotional piece of the process and has shared with us that he and his wife did IVF to conceive their first child. I still haven't felt an amazing rapport with him, but that's partly because most of our interactions at CCRM are with the nurses, not the doctor. UPDATE: Since doing two egg retrievals and one (successful) FET with Dr. G, I began to feel more of a rapport. You see the doctor more often during the IVF process and he calls personally with results of CCS testing. I found him to be empathetic and caring during the IVF process.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I love our nurse Chris! She is peppy, kind, and genuine. You don't always get to speak to your assigned nurse, but overall I've had a good experience with most of the nurses I've interacted with. I didn't run into any problems with communicating - everyone emails or calls back in a short amount of time. And for the most part, the nurses all have positive attitudes, which makes a huge difference given how difficult and emotional this process is.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Lost appointments
  • Failed to call with results
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr. G is young-ish (I'd say early 40s). He is a nice man and clearly strives to be compassionate towards his patients. He is very knowledgeable and I rarely felt that a question I had that wasn't answered to my satisfaction. He goes into each consultation with lots of information, so usually most of my questions were answered by his initial spiel. We picked him because we wanted to go with CCRM and heard that he had a better bedside manner than Schoolcraft or Surrey. Overall, I'm happy with our choice.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
This may sound a little strange, but come armed with some ice-breaker small talk before your initial consultation appointment. The first time we met with him, he tried to ask us questions to break the ice, but we were so tired, overwhelmed, and nervous that his attempt fell flat as a pancake. He clearly really wants to connect with his patients and make sure their experience is pleasant, but he's not a super gregarious guy. We like him, but have never felt a great rapport and I wonder if we would feel differently if we had been able to make a personal connection during this first visit. Also - this is true of all CCRM doctors - but you won't see him much. But, if you have questions, he's very good about responding to emails. He's responded to all of my email questions within 24 hours.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I have unexplained infertility, with the only known issue is a short luteal phase. We started out with Clomid + IUI (including HCG trigger shot and progesterone support). He explained that Clomid works better than Femara for short luteal phase. He gave us a 40% chance that IUI would work over the course of 3 cycles. We never had a positive pregnancy test from the IUIs. We then moved on to IVF. He recommended ICSI to give us the best odds of fertilization (since we've never had a positive pregnancy test and don't know where the problem is occurring). He also recommended CCS testing followed by an FET given my age (38) and to give us the best odds of a pregnancy the first time around. He predicted that one cycle of IVF would yield 6 embryos, 3 of which would be CCS normal. Our first egg retrieval, we did estrogen priming with Protocol 3 and a lupron trigger shot. We ended up with 14 eggs, 9 mature, 6 fertilized, 3 blastocysts, and one CCS normal. In our regroup, he explained that he was surprised by our results, but suspected that it was probably a pattern that it explained why I hadn't gotten pregnant naturally. It took a year's worth of eggs in perfect laboratory conditions to get one viable embryo. We decided to do a second IVF cycle to bank more embryos, because ideally we want two children. He switched the protocol for this next one in the hopes of getting more eggs/embryos, and noted that this part of the process was more art than science. We did testosterone priming and microdose lupron flare (protocol 6). This cycle was much more exciting and dramatic! At my first follicle check, one follicle had shot way ahead and was already over 20mm! After this, he told me to stop the microdose lupron and added ganorelix to keep me from ovulating. Ultimately, we let the lead follicle "go" and waited for the others to reach a good size. This time we did an HCG trigger shot, which I think helped a ton with egg maturity. We got 22 eggs, 13 mature, and 12 fertilized. 6 made it to blast this time, but, alas, only one was CCS normal. In some ways, the second retrieval seemed way more successful, but the ultimate result was the same as the first. This experience confirmed that there was definitely a pattern of something wrong with my eggs (or possibly the combination of my eggs and my husband's sperm). Even though it wasn't the result we wanted, I felt relieved to find out what was going on. Rather than bank more embryos, we moved on to an FET, which fortunately was successful on the first attempt! I don't think we did anything special - just the standard month of birth control pills, followed by estrogen patches, vaginal estrace, vaginal progesterone (endometrin), and progesterone in oil injections. The vaginal estrace was added once it was determined that my lining was borderline too thin. Those drugs continued until we started weaning after our 8.5 week ultrasound.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
I think the initial testing was $4K; we spent around $5-6K on three IUIs. We spent about $50-60K for two rounds of IVF/ICSI/CCS and one FET (including medications).

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I sometimes felt like a number because the clinic is very very popular. However, each nurse and doctor treated me like an individual and took time with me as a patient.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
My primary nurse (Lindsey) was very caring and sympathetic. She explained things thoroughly and clearly and answered my questions well. The receptionist was always friendly and nonjudgemental, and the ultrasound technician that I saw more than anyone else was always cheery and good at explaining things. However some of the other nurses didn't seem as caring, or made critical mistakes. One nurse didn't even know how many days were in half a week!
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr. G never made us feel rushed and always explained everything very thoroughly. He had a great bedside manner and was a compassionate doctor/surgeon. At first he got to know us, explained all of the test results, and the course of action. He showed assurance that he could help us. The reason for us not getting pregnant was a bit unexpected to us and to him, but once he uncovered the reason he explained everything very thoroughly.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Trust him. He really knows what he is doing and has done this many times.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We tried IUI for 3 cycles, as recommended, since there were no glaring reasons to jump straight to IVF. These involved letrozole, a trigger shot, and sperm washing. When those didn't work, we did IVF, which included follistim, ganarelix, menopur, and possibly other medications I don't remember. We did not use an HCG trigger shot because I was overstimulating, so we did a different kind that meant we had to freeze the embryos. Because of the freezing, we signed up for a study that performed comprehensive chromosomal screening on our embryos. It was then that we learned of my translocation. In the end we had only 5 good frozen embryos. While they were frozen my body recovered, then I was on multiple forms of estrogen (patch and pill) and progesterone (suppository and shot) while we prepped my uterine lining. We chose to transfer one embryo since there was no indication that I'd have trouble with one implanting, and it worked.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
In total we spent nearly $30K

When you factor in what other clinics charge for IVF, CCRM is quite expensive. But looking at biopsy and ccs testing and the first FET being included it's combrabile (~$23000). Their FETs are very expensive at ~$6000...Strengths are the providers/lab. Weakness is the business office...I was assigned a primary nurse but have rarely ever seen her, talked to her, gotten results from her. I've most often seen Caroline. She 'spilled the beans' about the gender of our first embryo transfer. Any time I get results it seems like it's a different nurse calling me. I purposefully let it go to voicemail every time especially with sensitive information because I don't find them very compassionate/sympathetic.

Dr. Gustafson I think can relate to his parents on a personal level having been through IVF himself. He is kind and mindful of how emotionally, financially and physically taxing this experience can be without sugar-coating or seeing unreal expectations. I appreciate that he told us he'd "tell us when to get off the roller coaster". As a health care professional myself I know there are no guarantees in this process. And while we haven't reached the outcome we're hoping for yet he has made this process so much better than our previous experience when of we don't see or talk to him directly that often.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I was assigned a primary nurse but have rarely ever seen her, talked to her, gotten results from her. I've most often seen Caroline. She 'spilled the beans' about the gender of our first embryo transfer. Any time I get results it seems like it's a different nurse calling me. I purposefully let it go to voicemail every time especially with sensitive information because I don't find them very compassionate/sympathetic. They're just reading of the results and rarely seem to have looked back to have a reference point.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to order appropriate test

What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Know that if he is telling you it's time to move on he has exhausted all of his resources/knowledge to help you. I truly believe that he is not concerned about his 'numbers' but about the well being of his patients.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Gonal-f, menopur, omnitrope, lupron, dexamethasone, hcg, cetrotide
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
When you factor in what other clinics charge for IVF, CCRM is quite expensive. But looking at biopsy and ccs testing and the first FET being included it's combrabile (~$23000). Their FETs are very expensive at ~$6000

Considering that we got pregnant on the first try, we are very happy with their this clinic and their capabilities. The clinic is extremely organized in their treatment approaches. The total cost of one cycle of IVF including CCS testing and Frozen Embryo Transfer [at CCRM] was about $24,000. CCRM charged $9,400 for doctor fees, procedures and surgical suites. Their incredible lab, Fertility Lab of Colorado, charged about $14,400 for clinical and embryology lab fees. This does not include the IVF diagnostic work up (about $5,000) anesthesia ($430) and other services that might be needed.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
This clinic has been incredible, you get what you pay for. It is quite expensive but the care has been excellent. Our doctor is extremely knowledgeable and compassionate, he has been very direct, straightforward and understanding. You definitely get more out of the experience and process if you come informed and with questions.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I have been able to email Dr. Gustofson directly about anything, he always responds and has been compassionate and straightforward in all my interactions with him.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Communication was always excellent with the nursing staff, they were always willing to answer questions and the after hours on call staff were always incredible.
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr. Gustofson was very direct, straightforward and compassionate. He didn't sugarcoat things or give false hope. He was realistic about our options and moving forward. He was extremely knowledgeable and brought up things that hadn't been brought up before. He was very specific in my treatment and it was clear that it was tailored to me.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Come prepared with questions, he'll answer them. Don't be afraid to reach out and follow up!
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
My protocol was designed to increase egg quality and quantity. I started with a month of priming using estrogen, testoterone and Saizen. Then we went into a Micro-Flare long Lupron protocol with Menopur and Gonal-F. My first IVF retrieved 8 eggs, none were viable for fertilization. This protocol yielded 15 eggs, 4 were mature and of good quality and 1 fertilized.

Staff at the clinic were all generally very helpful and professional. They were also prompt in returning calls and very pleasant when there for tests, etc. The clinic itself is clean, quiet and comfortable...There were times when it seemed like we got different information from different people at the clinic. For example, I would be told that I needed blood work but then when I would come in blood work would not be part of my tests that day. Or other times the blood work orders were not complete. It was good that I knew what I had been told because I was able to question them and things were fixed promptly when needed. This may have been because we would sometimes see different nurses who were not as familiar with our care. People were always quick to fix issues and always double checked anything I was concerned about.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
Staff at the clinic were all generally very helpful and professional. They were also prompt in returning calls and very pleasant when there for tests, etc. The clinic itself is clean, quiet and comfortable.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. G was very personable. My husband and I appreciated that he fully and clearly explained each stage in the process and what our fertility issues were. He asked us to consider difficult questions and gave us the time to do so recognizing that we would need time to think carefully about the options he was putting forth and what they could mean for us. He was also very encouraging and even phoned us to congratulate us personally when we had success.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
We did not always see Annalise although that is who we were assigned to. In fact it was another nurse, Melissa, who did my IUI and I often received calls from other nurses regarding test results. Annalise was very kind and helpful when we did meet with her. Melissa was also extremely professional and had a great sense of humor which helped me to feel comfortable when undergoing the IUI.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to order appropriate test
  • Provided conflicting information
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr. G is very personable and manages to balance a difficult topic with grace and humor. He helped us to feel very at ease throughout our treatment. Although he would write things out while talking to us about them we would still sometimes feel a little overwhelmed at the sheer amount of information. He also at times covered things very quickly. However we always felt that we had time to ask questions or clarify anything we might be confused about. We always felt like we were the patients he was focused on in that moment - it never seemed like we were rushed during our consults with him.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Be prepared for a lot of information and to ask questions and not be afraid to clarify when you need to. He's open to it.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We had to adjust out diet to take out caffeine completely and avoid alcohol. I was also put on levothyroxine to manage my TSH levels. Once we did the cycle I had to take clomid for several days and then took estrogen and progesterone supplements as well.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
Much of our treatment was covered, but we probably paid about $2000 out of pocket for the various tests and treatments that we had.

The Louisville offices are smaller and very friendly, easy to access and comfortable. The bigger facilities in Parker are much further away, and much larger and more intimidating, but people are still quite nice. I loved the staff in the Louisville office. My only disappointment was that my favorite person, the very friendly and warm secretary who checked us in each time, left the office between my second and third rounds of ivf, and we didn't get any explanation why or where she went. I'm sure this was due to privacy reasons, but I would have liked the chance to thank her for her kindness, especially after our second-trimester pregnancy loss in the first round, and to wish her well. Carrie, who was also at the front desk, was also very nice and so patient and helpful with billing and insurance issues. It seems like the office had some turnover of staff between our second and third round, which was disconcerting at first, but did not turn out to be a trend. We liked everybody we saw at the Louisville offices. The only person I didn't really feel that comfortable with was one of the acupuncturists at the Parker office. She was a little abrupt with me and seemed more concerned with payment than anything else.

He took a lot of time with us during appointments, he answered all of our questions, he was direct but always very kind to us, and he communicated clearly and promptly at all times.

Efficient, friendly, patient, very skilled
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr Gustofson is clearly very good at what he does but is also a very kind and compassionate doctor. He was very patient with all of our questions and also very friendly and reassuring. I never felt rushed at appointments and never was pressured into a particular course of action.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Don't mess around with less expensive clinics -- go to the best first. Dr Gustofson will give you the best possible advice and care.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Because of my poor response to the first round of IVF treatment at another clinic, Dr Gustofson felt that it would be difficult to get pregnant using my own eggs, so we opted for using donor eggs and got pregnant easily. Because of a previous loss of a triplet pregnancy (with two embryos, one of which split), Dr Gustofson refused to transfer more than one embryo. He also had me on progesterone-in-oil injections, rather than just suppositories. Both times that we did these things, I had easy successful singleton pregnancies.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
Can't remember what the costs of the first round (fresh donor-egg transfer) was. Two subsequent frozen transfers were about 10-12 thousand, including medications but not including recommended pre -transfer acupuncture sessions

The clinic [CCRM] needs to be better about follow up. The business office has yet to respond to our request for a pricing breakdown. They need to be more responsive to voicemail.... We were diagnosed with Male Infertility. My husband had already been seen by a urologist and Dr. Gustofson's first approach was to better understand the treatment thus far. From there we were given the options to use a donor. We were then advised on the donor banks, then the IUI and IVF process. These decisions have yet to be mad on our part we are currently in step one which is getting the information from the Urologist to Dr. G. for review and his opinion on if we should pursue any further treatments for Male Infertility.

The clinic needs to be better about follow up. The business office has yet to respond to our request for a pricing breakdown. They need to be more responsive to voicemail.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
The Doctor spent time outlining all of our options and understanding our health history fully. He never made it feel like he was rushing us thru the process. He took his time and answered every question that we had. He also took notes for us with all the details of our discussion outlined.
Describe your experience with your nurse.

Dr. Gustofson did an excellent job explaining every step in the treatment process he didn't make any of it sound scary and was very understanding of our opinions on some of the steps. He was also very understanding and patient with us. He took his time to explain all of our options and made sure to address all of our questions.

I'd definitely recommend for patients to go to the Louisville office [of CCRM] rather than Lone Tree. We had all of our regular appointments at Louisville and it was nice to get to know the staff. It was consistently the same team at the front desk, for blood draws, ultrasounds, and I was able to meet with Chris almost every time. We had to go to the Lonetree office for a few weekend Ultrasounds + labs, as well as the retrieval and transfer procedures and I could see how it could feel a bit more like a factory and less personal.

If it's not too much trouble distance-wise, I'd definitely recommend for patients to go to the Louisville office rather than Lone Tree. We had all of our regular appointments at Louisville and it was nice to get to know the staff. It was consistently the same team at the front desk, for blood draws, ultrasounds, and I was able to meet with Chris almost every time. During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
The very first appointment we had with Dr. G started with us talking about our mutual home state of Florida, and how much we all loved Colorado, snow and skiing. It was nice to get to know him a little bit on a personal level before diving into our case. It also was very clear that he had spent some time reviewing our medical records that were transferred over to his office - he knew our history before we even walked in to his office. Every time he saw us, he knew who we were, gave us a warm smile and handshake, and brought up non-medical things we had chatted about at our previous visits.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Chris was very kind, compassionate, and was totally our cheerleader. She was very on top of our treatment cycles and also was very prompt at answering questions and calling with our lab results. We couldn't ask for a better nurse.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Lost appointments
  • Failed to order appropriate test
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr. G somehow was both gentle and very honest when talking to us about our chances of success. We had the utmost faith in his abilities when treating us - we felt like he was extremely knowledgeable, experienced and a top caliber physician. Even if we didn't see him at one of the routine lab appointments, he still reviewed our results and gave notes to the nurse, which made it feel like he was there every single step of the way. In retrospect, the only thing that stood out as sort of challenging was us not fully knowing what would happen if things didn't go according to plan. To be totally fair - this was to keep us focused on the plan successfully working rather than potentially needlessly worrying. For example - When we were gearing up for the frozen transfer and selected the embryo to transfer, I asked what would happen if this one didn't take. He assured me that there was a plan B (and wouldn't reveal what it was), but wanted me to be focused on plan A succeeding.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Dr. G is very happy to answer questions and to meet with you. Take advantage of this.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
OCP Antagonist protocol with the goal of fresh embryo transfer. We ended up just going through egg retrieval and not doing a fresh transfer since my estrogen levels were through the roof and I was at risk for OHSS. Protocol included ~2 weeks of birth control, followed by stim meds. Those were Menopur in the morning, Gonal F + dexamethasone at night. Then after 5 days I added in Cetrotide in the mornings for another 5 days. For the trigger I ended up not needing Lupron and just did an injection of HCG. I also was on antibiotics around time of egg retrieval. They retrieved 30 eggs, which was a great number. I was hoping for 20-25. About 15 of them fertilized (half with ICSI, half on their own) and 8 looked good by day 5 and went into the freezer. We then had to wait for me to start my period (took about ~12 days if I remember correctly), and on day 3 of my cycle i started birth control pills again for about ~2 weeks to kick off a Frozen Transfer cycle. This cycle started with estrogen patches (Vivelle) which i swapped out every other day. Then after about 10 days I started Endometrin (progesterone) vaginal suppositories 2x a day, Medrol, Estrace, Doxycycline and a intramuscular Progesterone in Oil injection every other day up til transfer (about 6 days of this regiment). We transferred 1 frozen embryo and continued on the patches, endometrin, estrace, and progesterone in oil. 10 days later I went in for a pregnancy blood test and found out that afternoon that we were pregnant. I am currently 9 weeks pregnant and have just received instructions for weaning off the meds, and expect to be totally finished with them in about a week and a half.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
Our fresh embryo transfer through Optum Parent Steps program (a program offered through our Insurance agency United Healthcare) cost about $14,000. Medications for the fresh transfer were about $3500. Our Frozen Embryo Transfer (also through Optum Parent Steps) cost $4500. Medications for the frozen transfer were about $600, and once I was pregnant the meds were another $1200 to last me through week 10 (at which time I weaned off).

We made Dr. Gustavsson aware of the issue and he immediately corrected it, apologized for it, and handled the entire situation with grace...I had one egg retrieval, one fresh transfer resulting in a twin pregnancy, one frozen transfer which I miscarried in my first trimester, and another frozen transfer which resulted in another twin pregnancy. The protocol for the retrieval and transfers were very standard - there were slight adjustments made along the way based on my hormone levels but nothing out of the ordinary.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Gustavsson is wonderful! I felt very much guided through the process and genuinely cared by him personally. With each pregnancy I not only received detailed information from the nurses but a personal phone call from Dr. Gustavsson himself. Additionally, he always responded promptly to phone messages and emails.

How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
I honestly can't say enough good things about Dr. Gustavsson. He is kind, caring, and compassionate – as if he's been through the process personally he seems to really relate. He has celebrated in our joy and been kind and understanding during our loss. We had a small issue with the clinic at one point and Dr. Gustavsson met with us one on one, personally excepted responsibility and apologized, and he and his staff resolved the issue quickly. It was a testament to the honorable way in which he operates during a stressful situation. He did the right thing; my husband and I could not have been happier with the resolution. Less than stellar things will always happen in life and what matter to us was the way that he handled it.

How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr. G was very knowledgeable and explained things there early to us to make sure we understood the procedures and medications taking. He was very professional and understanding through whole process.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Don't need to do too much research as Dr. G will explain a lot. Also he will go through each and every step with you.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We did IUI for two cycles with Clomid and did not succeed. So he was very upfront with us that a third cycle would not work and we went to IVF For the next cycle. I did the vitamin cocktail along with Gonal-F. We succeeded with transferring one egg
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
I think the total cost with doctor visits, medications, pills, vitamins was around 32,000

I had to ask his team [at CCRM] FOUR times if they would test my thyroid levels. Finally, they did. I was not surprised to learn that I had hypothyroidism... This was only one of the issues I encountered during my time at CCRM and one of the reasons I am not likely to return to the clinic.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I was a "difficult" case for Dr. G - only 30 years old with hormone levels that did not match my age. He was clear that they would not do anything for us with my own eggs because of my premature ovarian failure diagnosis. He was blunt and rude and did not present any other options, treatments, possibilities or hope. I knew it was due to preserving statistics. I did not feel important, worthy, or cared for.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
They were fine. Not wonderful, not awful. I found that I had to be proactive in communicating with them to get answers - that they did not reach out often or easily to me.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to order appropriate test
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
He was cold, robotic and not compassionate. I was treated like a number, and unfortunately given my age and hormone test results, a number he did not feel like dealing with. I was too hard for him to solve. I would mess up his statistics if he couldn't help me - and so, he didn't.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
If you have a typical, "easy", solvable case, Dr. G might be a great fit. But if you have atypical issues or need more creative problem solving, he is not the doctor that will help you.

Dr Gustofson is a caring and compassionate doctor. He is very clear about the options, risks, and expectations. Dr. Gustofson always asked us about how things were going. Not just related to our treatment but he knew our interests and was focused on all of is, not just our infertility. He also always explained everything and didn't expect us to be in and out quickly.
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr. G was always positive and understanding. He knew how taxing and frustrating everything can be and was available as much as we needed. We could talk to him whenever we needed and he reassured us often.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Be patient and know that they are doing everything they can. Don't second guess things just because you've read or heard something different. If they're doing it correctly, your treatment won't be exactly like anyone else's

CCRM is a fertility factory. As such, they have an industrial approach to IVF: there are different models of the product (IVF) and you are assigned to a particular model. If you do not happen to fit into one of their models, you are SOL. There is no attempt to personalize models to the individual. Also, their prices are truly exploitative. I felt like I was being over charged for everything. I think that even if my cycle had been successful, I would have felt like I overpaid.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Gustofson showed little empathy when delivering difficult information and seemed to have just briefly scanned my chart notes before speaking with me. There were some instances in which he made the extra effort to reach out to me with a phone call when things were not looking good, and I appreciated this greatly. But when my cycle went badly, I felt like he just gave up on me and wrote me off. I felt like I was just a a problem for maintaining CCRM's statistics and he had no interest in actually addressing the challenging particularities of my situation.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I never actually met Helen, which is indicative of how CCRM runs. I wish I could have had the opportunity to see her, at least once. But despite not meeting her, she was a competent nurse.

How was your experience with Robert Gustofson?
Dr Gustofson had some definite strengths as a doctor -- he was personable and gave us plenty of time to ask questions during our initial consult; he reached out to me with a personal phone call when things weren't looking good; and he overall seems to believe in what he is doing. However, under his care I also experienced some interactions and situations that made me very uncomfortable with him as a doctor overall. The main problem I had with him was that when my cycle did not go as expected, he lacked empathy and, moreover, the willingness to problem-solve, to really dig into my unique situation and work with me. I felt like I had suddenly shifted from being a patient to being a problem. I did one unsuccessful IVF cycle with him at the age of 36 and he told me that my only option was donor eggs. He made absolutely no concession to the fact that the aggressive, high-stim protocol that he chose for me might have influenced my egg quality. He said that since the same protocol worked for other women, the problem is obviously me, not the protocol. Talk about faulty logic... He made no concession for the fact that we are also dealing with male factor. He simply told me, in a blunt and heartless way, that my eggs are crap and I should move on. Other doctors at smaller clinics who are willing to work to customize protocols for individual patients have since given me hope, but at the time, I felt just crushed by his pronouncements. I think the main problem with Dr Gustofson's approach to treating infertility is that he lacks humility and the willingness to work with a person as an individual. He believes wholeheartedly in his approach and is not willing to see others' points of view. There is so much about the field that is mysterious and he doesn't seem willing to admit that. Pity the patient who doesn't fit into his clearly-drawn lines. His approach seems to reflect the factory-like nature of CCRM. He has many patients, none of whom receive quite enough attention. As a result, he made some serious errors while I was under his care, forgetting very important things that I had told him and then acting as if his mistake was my fault.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson?
Expect to be treated like a cog in the system.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I was on CCRM's estrogen priming protocol with testosterone and HGH. It was a protocol that seemed to make sense for me but was disastrous. I was on very high doses of both Follistim and Menopur (450-550 total). I never received a clear rationale for using the protocol, except that it was geared towards maximizing egg quality.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson.
We spent roughly $35K on one cycle.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I have a very difficult diagnosis and Eric Surrey wanted to be the only Dr at CCRM to help us because it was so difficult. He has kept to that promise. He was excited and optimistic in the good times and compassionate in the hard times. He was also very honest in our chances and never gave us false hope.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I spoke with Amy 90% of the time and another nurse only 10% of the time, which I like as Amy knew what was going on with me. I spoke to Amy 2-3 times a week if not more. She was always informative and took the time to answer my millions of questions. She would also consult Dr. Surrey and get right back to me if needed.
How was your experience with Eric Surrey?
After having 3 local RE's tell us our only hope was donor eggs we went to CCRM. Eric Surrey was honest and upfront that our chances were slim but he was willing and able to help us at least try. We ended up getting 3 great embryos. Our first transfer failed and he was compassionate yet optimistic for the next one. Our second transfer took and he was so excited for us, unfortunately after we were released from CCRM we had a 2nd trimester miscarriage. In our talks with Dr. Surrey now he has come with great options to try again with either trying to transfer into me again or a gestational carrier. I have CCRM to thank for giving me even the option of using my own eggs. Every step of the way from the nurses, to the front desk ladies to the lab techs and everyone in the operation area, they are all top-notch professionals. I cannot recommend CCRM and Dr. Surrey enough. You are in gentle, caring, empathetic, professional hands with them.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Surrey?
CCRM is expensive and the processing is daunting and scary. Trust them. They are a world class research facility in the top of their field, they won't steer you in the wrong direction. I would (and probably will) do it all again with them in a heartbeat.
Describe the protocols Eric Surrey used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I don't remember the specific type of protocol for my retrieval, but we did clomid, final-f, menopure, cetrotide, and triggered with Lupron. Dr Surrey went pretty aggressive as I only have one ovary and at 31 have poor quantity and quality eggs. We ended up with 3 great quality embryos to freeze out of the 7 they retrieved. It may sound like a small number but the percentages are amazing with what we were working with. Transfer we used birth control, lupron, endometrian, progesterone injections, vivelle estrogen patches and an oral estrogen. My lining did really well on this.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Surrey.
CCRM is very expensive. The first day initial work up was around $5,000, then the upfront cost for egg retrieval and first transfer was about $15,000 and then optional (which we did) CCS (genetic testing) for up to 10 embryos was $8,000. Medications were not included in this price which was about $6,000 for the retrieval and $1,500 for each transfer.

The clinic is run like a factory. They are in the top tier in the industry and they know people will go to them no matter what. Their finance dept is the worst, they held off my transfer cycle till the payment went through. You pay ahead and then they adjust their books and pay back the excess. Dr. Surrey was very personable from the get-go. He treats so many patients, yet everytime I saw him over the course of the year, he remembered so many details about me. It felt nice to know, you were not just a number with this clinic

How was your experience with Eric Surrey?
Dr. Surrey is a fantastic doctor! He has a goofy sense of humor which makes him very personable. I was an out of state patient that had gone through two doctors and many ivf cycles. I was very dejected by the time I went to him...I told him I am open to donor eggs at this point. Dr. surrey convinced me to try with own eggs first. I am so glad I listened to him. Also, when the protocol did not work the first time( I ovulated early). He was so apologetic about it and waived off the fees for that cycle. Next time, he closely monitored me

My initial retrieval & fresh trahsfer including meds was $34,000...The clinic is very organized and has the entire procedure beginning from your first check-in, to blood draw timings, and procedures down to a science. Most clinics you sit in the waiting room for long periods of time whereas CCRM is pretty timely in keeping on schedule...Ellie has a very pleasant attitude. She is overall very helpful when needing additional information. She was timely in her responses.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
The clinic is very organized and has the entire procedure beginning from your first check-in, to blood draw timings, and procedures down to a science. Most clinics you sit in the waiting room for long periods of time whereas CCRM is pretty timely in keeping on schedule.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Although this is a very busy practice Dr Schoolcraft has a wonderful bedside manner making you feel like you're his only patient.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Ellie has a very pleasant attitude. She is overall very helpful when needing additional information. She was timely in her responses.
How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
I truly had very minimal interaction with Dr. Schoolcraft but when I did he was very helpful. He explained outcomes, risks and purposes for using a specific drug vs other drugs for example. I remember coming out of one my procedures and he walked with me down the hall saying, "you're superwoman, you handled that procedure like a champ". So when I did see him on rare occasion he was very comforting & supportive.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
make sure you have a list of questions written down when you know you will be talking with Dr. Schoolcraft. You only interact with him a few times so your time is limited and you want to be prepared.
Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I'm sorry I don't have that info handy. I was on birth control, hormone treatments for egg production, progesterone, lupron, estradiol, and a few others.
Describe the costs associated with your care under William Schoolcraft.
I can't remember everything but my last years costs for transfer procedures was $11,000 plus an additional $2100 for medications. My initial retrieval & fresh trahsfer including meds was $34,000.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
CCRM is impressive. It has fancy decor, waterfalls, and high ceilings. But it's like a factory and you never feel like you are treated as a patient but a number.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
CCRM is a very busy practice. I am a physician and hoped to be treated as one. In the end, I felt like just a number and a checkbook. Everything there is double the price anywhere else. There was ONE nurse who I worked with who was compassionate and warm, the rest treated you like a number. In the end, because we complained, I was given special treatment but only because we had had such poor results.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Katie was the best. She was compassionate, caring, and helpful. She was the best part of CCRM.
How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
Dr. Schoolcraft is clearly a very educated physician. He is very professional but lacks in the area of compassion. We had to use TWO different donor's for my second and third cycle of donor egg IVF and the first resulted in a chemical pregnancy after only ONE egg fertilized of 10 frozen eggs. The second donor cycle I asked for PGS to be performed as this would be my SIXTH IVF, and I was told it did NOT need to be done. I ended up with a 13 week Down's syndrome baby that I miscarried, required a d&e for, and hemorrhaged. In the end, there is no need to go all the way to Colorado to pay double the price without the outcome.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
There is nothing special about traveling all the way to Colorado for fertility treatments unless you live there already. Stay local and pay less.
Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I had already undergone 3 cycles of IVF in my hometown: 2 fresh cycles with my own eggs (neg pregnancy tests), and a third cycle FET with PGS tested normal embryos which resulted in a blighted ovum. I had heard that CCRM was the place for difficult cases so I went there. I underwent a FET after a retrieval of PGS tested normal embryos which resulted in a negative pregnancy test. At that point, it was recommended I either use a donor egg or a surrogate, but I was not given direction as to which was preferred. I chose to use a donor egg. I used a donor who had 10 eggs frozen. When we arrived, only ONE fertilized and was transferred on day 3. I was heartbroken and begged for him to also transfer my last frozen embryo so a day 5 transfer of my embryo was also performed that cycle (double transfer). After a chemical pregnancy, I insisted that since I had the worst donor ever, I was given special consideration. After a long conversation, he stated I could try again with a proven donor from his database for free. She had 16 frozen eggs and we transferred 2 day 5 embryos. I had asked for them to be PGS tested but I was told that was unnecessary. I ended up with a positive NIPT test at 10 weeks for down's and a positive CVS for down's. I then miscarried at 13 weeks. I then left CCRM and returned to my hometown where I am now 30 weeks pregnant after donor egg IVF on my first try.
Describe the costs associated with your care under William Schoolcraft.
Almost double the price of any other fertility clinic I have encountered. I paid approximately 42k for my donor cycle and back in my hometown, I was given an amazing donor (who produces over 60 eggs per cycle and has already given 2 other couples babies) and paid a total of 25k total and I'm actually going to end up a mom! Everything is pay first and if you get reimbursed later, then you're lucky. You speak with financial people almost every major visit.

Really difficult to get a hold of with lots of phone tag. That changed a bit for the transfer b/c the nurse gave me her direct number, but it still wasn't so great....My 'home' clinic sent information that CCRM interpreted differently, and then blamed my home clinic, which was totally inaccurate. And, I had a biopsy and they never called to tell me it was normal. I had to call them....Difficult to coordinate with and it's like a factory.

Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I sent 5 frozen eggs there in 2013 that were retreived and frozen in 2012. One did not defrost successfully. Of those 4, all were ICSIed and 1 fertilized (that was the worst result for all 6 cycles in terms of fertilization percentage, so I don't know if it was b/c the eggs were frozen badly or got damaged during shipment), that one made it to day 5, and was chromosomally normal. I transfered it in 2015 and am pregnant now. Thank I did 2 additional egg retrievals there. One was with ganirelix for 3 days before menses, then a lupron micro-dose every 12 hours for a few days and then adding menopur and 300 fsh/day. The other one was ganirelix for 3 days before menses, then menopur and 300 fsh/day. He tried the lupron micro-dosing but it didn't produce more eggs, so the antagonist was better. We used ICSI and about 75% fertilized each time. I had 2 make it to day 5, but none were chromosomally normal

I was most disappointed in my nurse. She was rude and disorganized, always calling me at the end of the day with vital information on medicine and next steps, putting me in a panic to get the correct drugs on time due to my rural location. She would often call my home line despite requests to use my cell, also creating issues for managing care on time-sensitive matters. When working with my local hospital/lab on procuring blood work results, she was not helpful at all in communicating or working with the local resources. Every day was more stressful than it needed to be.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
CCRM is clean and very much it's own hospital facility. Easy parking.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
It is a busy clinic. I did not expect hand holding or emotional support. They can recommend you join support groups or see counsellors for that. I was there for their lab and proven results, so being a number was fine with me.

How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
Schoolcraft is blunt and honest, which I valued. When trying to figure out how many embryos to transfer, he asked us "What scares you more: failure or twins?" It was exactly the question we needed to be asked to make the right decision for us. It worked. We now have boy/girl twins conceived in our first round of IVF.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
Expect a professional who has years of experience and results, but don't expect him to hold your hand, cry with you, or walk you through every detail. He is available when medically necessary and answered all our big questions, carefully evaluating and adjusting our plan as needed.
Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
They made the decision to abandon the fresh transfer when my hormone levels did not cooperate. While frustrating to travel back home four hours away and wait several weeks on more medication to attempt a frozen transfer, the cycle was successful and thus prudent to adjust.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
I did most monitoring away from the clinic as I lived four hours away.

How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
Doctor Schoolcraft was very thorough in explaining the risks and benefits for transferring more than 1 embryo and made sure that we were absolutely sure we were ok with the chance of having twins or more. We now have b/g twins and couldn't be happier with the results! Dr. Schoolcraft personally called me back when I had questions about doing chromosomal testing and whether or not he thought it was necessary. He was very honest and told me he did not think we needed to do it because of my age and other factors. That saved us thousands, when he could have said yes you need to do it in order to charge us more money. I appreciated his honesty in every situation we encountered.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
Ask lots of questions, don't be shy. He's there to answer your questions and address your concerns.
Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I was on the lowest doses of meds and responded well to the protocol. They did a great job monitoring and adjusting meds as needed. I did have some hyper stimulation, but they made adjustments and also had me take an oral medication to help and we were able to go through with a fresh transfer. Had they not reacted and adjusted meds at the first sign of hyper stimulation we may have had to pay thousand more to do a frozen cycle.
Describe the costs associated with your care under William Schoolcraft.
Part of our treatment was donated, but I believe we still paid at least $8000 out of pocket.

on his famous ODWU he recommended DE to us, his reasoning was I failed to make Blast on 2 previous IVFs. I was 32 and DH 33 at the time. AFC 10-12 . NOT DOR pt. I explained that I am so many eggs left and I am still young and not ready for DE. He said hes willing to try IVM but hes not too hopeful!

How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
I went to CCRM w high hopes. From my initial consult Dr S suggested DE based on my two failed cycles. I explained to him that I'm not ready to give up on my own eggs at 32, my afc is around 10-12 so I do have lots of eggs left I explained that I can do DE at late 30s. He suggested IVM which I wasn't comfortable with since is experimental but the results won't be reported (part of SART) which he's really big on...On day 3 the embryologist called me and said I have good looking day 3 with less than 10% frag and I told him I want to freeze but he said it's not up to him ! I begged my nurse to freeze one on day 3 but she said Dr Slijes to push them to blast and CCS testing is part of my protocol(did I Mention I was 32 w no known genetic problems all tests were normal.) but they get to charge you extra 4K for CCS testing. Once again I went w his recommendation but I should have trusted my gut! On day 6 the embryologist called to said none made it.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
The doctor's are the strengths at CCRM. I believe they are all infertility specialists and have something unique to bring to CCRM and their patients. If you're not happy with one doctor at CCRM, ask to see another doctor.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I felt like a human because after our son was born I 2015, Dr. Surrey called us to congratulate us. When we started back up with IVF in 2017, Dr. Surrey met our son. At both FETs in 2017, he asked how our son was, BY NAME!
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I was not a big fan of my first IVF transfer nurse, Helaine. She didn't call in the birth control before my pharmacy closed for the weekend, and she didn't call in enough to get me on the right schedule. Then, when we were suffering our miscarriage, she was basically telling us that we should brace ourselves for losing both embryos. She also said it was not typical for first-time IVFers to get pregnant. Thankfully, she left CCRM before my next transfer in June 2017. I loved that nurse - gosh I wish I remembered her name. She was on the ball - always calling me back when I had a question just to let me know she got my message, even if she didn't have the answer yet. But, she ended up leaving CCRM right after our miscarriage. For our last transfer, they were still trying to figure out what nurse was assigned to us. So, I ended up talking to and seeing multiple nurses. It was hard because some nurses were super sweet and took their time talking to me and answering my questions. Other nurses seemed to be in a hurry and sometimes short with me on the phone if I had questions.

How was your experience with Eric Surrey?
Meeting Dr. Surrey was intimidating because my husband and I were just coming to understand what our fertility issues were. However, he was vey clear with what our issues were and that we would never be able to naturally conceive a child (that was his bluntness, but I really appreciated that moment of truth). He indicated that we were perfect candidates for IVF. We got all the "checkboxes" checked, T's crossed and i's dotted and I went in for a lining check before retrieval. As it turns out, I had a cyst. Dr. Surrey's favorite nurse (I was not a fan) said we would have to cancel the retrieval. I demanded to speak to Dr. Surrey - so he came to see me, performed the ultrasound again to confirm a cyst and said he could drain it on the spot. THANK GOODNESS he came to the ultrasound room. Shortly after that, he performed our only retrieval. He was gentle, and kind. He knew I was afraid of needles but assured my husband and I they would take good care of me while in retrieval. SUCCESS! Our first IVF cycle was a fresh transfer, so 5 days later, we were back in his office for a transfer. He recommended transferring only one embryo, but told me I could convince him to transfer 2, which we did. Shortly thereafter, it was confirmed that I was pregnant, and my numbers looked like twins! Unfortunately, my numbers started dropping just a few days later. As it turns out, we lost one embryo but were still pregnant with the other. Dr. Surrey called all the time to tell us the good and bad news. We are forever grateful for Dr. Surrey because we now have a beautiful 2 year old son, Ethan. When Ethan was born, we sent Dr. Surrey a birth announcement. He wrote us a letter back and called us congratulating us. In 2017, we did 2 transfers with Dr. Surrey again. He was hesitant the second transfer because he wanted me to lose some weight first, but didn't argue with me. I wish I had listened to him. It was hard to hear that I should lose weight, but he was telling me what was best for all of us. We had a successful transfer in June 2017 and were pregnant with 1 embryo. Again, he was very congratulatory. Unfortunately, we miscarried at 5 weeks. Dr. Surrey was the on-call doctor when I was having my miscarriage late one night. I was SO VERY thankful that it was him that answered the phone. He stayed calm and tried to calm me down with specific instructions until I could see them in the morning. Dr. Surrey was upset along with us when it was confirmed via ultrasound that we had, in fact, lost our baby. We told him we were not giving up and to see us in a couple of months. In October 2017, we did another round of IVF and transferred 2 embryos. Unfortunately, neither embryo took, and Dr. Surrey was on the phone with me very shortly afterward to talk about the path forward. We talked multiple scenarios and he provided his recommendation until we agreed on a path forward. In my opinion, Dr. Surrey KNOWS what he's doing. He is very good at his job. He will always tell you what the best path forward is, but will offer other scenarios and tell you the risks associated with everything. I feel like he's a good listener, is understanding, compassionate, blunt, and is willing to work with you. He is honest, and that carries so much weight.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Surrey?
Dr. Surrey will be blunt, and it might hurt to hear the truth (initially), but he knows what he's doing.
Describe the protocols Eric Surrey used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Before each cycle, I took a low-dose birth control pill. After that, the meds were basically the same. Endometrin, Vivelle, Lupron, Progesterone in oil, Medrol, Doxycycline. We had success twice (IVF) with this protocol, but not the third IVF cycle. My cycle started with Lupron 10u/day until I started my Endometrin and Medrol and Doxycycline. I was on 1 patch of Vivelle every other day for 8 days and then it increased one patch every other day until told to stop. I started the Progesterone in Oil 0.5 mg every other day in the morning 5 days before the transfer. Again, I was told to continue all medications until specifically instructed to change or stop.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Surrey.
$2856.62 to CCRM, $3401 Fertility Labs of Colorado (FLC), medication typically ran from $1800-$3500 depending on the cycle. I don't remember specifics on what I paid for each blood draw or ultrasound.

He did an extremely thorough workup and was very upfront about his impression and what he felt would get us the best results. When we decided to go ahead with the transfer to me, even though he recommended doing a gestational carrier, he supported us. There were a few times where we don't feel like he gave us a good explanation or solid reasoning behind his recommendations but our case was very unusual and so it was kind of understandable.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
You will get a very thorough workup and he may find something others have not. He is excellent at what he does and his lab is the best in the country. But don't expect a warm and fuzzy approach or to see him often or for a long period of time. He is very curt and up front but we don't mind that.
Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
For the egg retrieval he started with a high dose of stimulation meds even though I had responded well in the past but said we could always back down. He delayed the retrieval by one day since we had such a large variation of egg size. His colleague retrieved 18 eggs but only 5 were mature and only 1 fertilized so they did a "rescue ICSI" on the second day which is still kind of an experimental procedure and all remaining 9 fertilized, 6 made it to day 5 embryos and 5 were PGS normal. We decided to do a transfer on me instead of GC, although Dr. Schoolcraft said chances were much higher with GC but since we had 5 PGS norma embryos we thought it was with one try. Since I had +anti-phospholipid antibodies I started on lovenox one the day of transfer. We did a prep with dexamethasone, doxy, endometrin, progesterone in oil injection, estradiol patches and we had a positive pregnancy test 2 weeks ago with increasing hcg levels. Our first 6.5 week ultrasound is in 2 days so well see!

The nursing staff is pretty big at CCRM. They are competent, knowledgable, and responsive. Sometimes it felt like communications could slip through the cracks and sometimes extra follow up was necessary. I was also very anxious at certain points and it's hard to discern whether it was my need for quick responses or they were slow on replies...What I really like about CCRM is how thorough they are with diagnostics. The one day work up is totally exhausting, but worth it. I had to undergo an HSG, hysteroscopy, doppler to determine blood flow levels to my uterus, and a lot of laboratory work. Not all clinics require all of these diagnostics. My results were unremarkable. However, my best friend who also goes to Dr Schoolcraft had a polyp detected during the hysteroscopy, which he removed before proceeding with an eSET. I think that all factors that could impede success with IVF should be ruled out beforehand, otherwise it is major waste of time and money. The other thing I liked about CCRM was that they do an estrogen priming cycle before the egg retrieval. I had better egg retrieval results at age 39 at CCRM and than Fertility Centers of Illinois at age 37. FCI did not do estrogen priming cycles. I think the hardest part of working with CCRM is waiting to get started on the process since there are steps to take before an egg retrieval and transfer, and you cannot dive right in. It's worth it though.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Schoolcraft has a mild mannered demeanor. He was very positive and optimistic for me. When I miscarried after the first embryo transfer, we talked on the phone. The first thing he said was, "I'm sending you a big hug." I had a nasty reaction to the progesterone in oil and he validated how awful that was and that that may be been the cause of why my pregnancy did not progress. He offered up doing a natural cycle the second time and expressed optimism for that approach for me.

How was your experience with William Schoolcraft?
Dr. Schoolcraft is a mild mannered person. He can be engaging, warm, and make small talk. He can also be a little flat at times, but that doesn't bother me. He generally gets to the point pretty quickly and takes time to answer questions.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Schoolcraft?
Have all of your questions written down and ready before speaking to him. He's not easy to access directly outside of scheduled face to face or phone appointments.
Describe the protocols William Schoolcraft used in your cycles and their degree of success.
1. Medicated cycle for first FET with single embryo transfer. This is pretty standard at fertility clinics. It's easiest to schedule and allows doctors to control all of the variable with synthetic hormones. I got pregnant and miscarried at week 5. I did not tolerate progesterone in oil well. We switched from sesame oil to ethyl oleate during the cycle. I did better with the ethyl oleate but then got really sick when I was expected to increase the dose following a positive pregnancy test. My pregnancy ended after I got sick. I opted for the single embryo transfer. My odds were 50% chance of it working. 2. Natural cycle for second FET: We took this approach due to my reaction to the progesterone in oil. Dr. Schoolcraft did not like the side effects and said it could have caused inflammation that terminated the pregnancy. He said that natural cycles were as effective as medicated cycles. (His nurse told me she has seen an uptick in the number of natural cycles happening for his patients, but wasn't sure if these were local patients.) The natural cycle does not involve progesterone in oil injections. I felt much better using this approach and have had positive home pregnancy tests. I will go in for a beta tomorrow. I also did acupuncture and Maya abdominal massage, which he was in support of. He also recommended transferring 2 embryos to better my odds. 70% chance of success with 2 embryos with a 30% chance of twins. I decided to bit the bullet and tempt twins.
Describe the costs associated with your care under William Schoolcraft.
A lot was covered by my health insurance. The CCS testing on the embryos was over $5K. The FET was over $5K. If you have United Healthcare PPO that is the best to have for CCRM. Both the clinic and lab are in-network with UHC. UHC is the only insurance the lab accepts. The clinic accepts a few other types of health insurance. I would say that insurance covers 2/3 the total cost.

[At CCRM] I followed two proverbs... squeaky wheel gets the grease and you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. (They're a bit outdated and cheesy but true.) I never had any problems with getting my questions answered or issues resolved as long as I was kind and assertive. A little human kindness goes such a long way on both ends.

Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
Everyone at the clinic from the administrative staff to billing to medical records is warm and friendly and tries to be helpful. During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Surrey was and is warm, kind, and compassionate while also being forthright, firm, and honest. I appreciated both, and my husband really appreciated the honesty. Our previous doctor gave us completely unrealistic odds, so Dr. Surrey's honesty while hard to hear was also helpful.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
My nurse had been with CCRM for several years, and she was confident, organized, compassionate, and funny. She always returned my phone calls and answered multiple anxious questions a week. She was like a therapist and nurse rolled in one! Going through IVF is so stressful, and while I still had to be my own advocate in the system, I wouldn't have been able to do it all without Lainie. She was wonderful!!!
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Lost appointments
How was your experience with Eric Surrey?
Dr. Surrey was always warm and compassionate through the process. Prior to even going to CCRM, he read over my case and answered all my questions in the phone consult, and then, after our one day work up, he presented me and my husband a clear path forward. He explained any changes in thought processes he had (e.g., change of protocol, change of our chances), and he didn't force family building plan on us because he was concerned that our odds were pretty low. He reassured me at the regroup prior to egg retrieval that he would be watching my case even though we were nearing the end of stimulation over a weekend. It's a good thing he was because I al
