This [California Fertility Partners] is the nicest medical facility I have ever been in. The lobby is just lovely. You never wait. It's easy to schedule all follow-up appointments and everything is very coordinated and is very organized....The environment is personal and when you walk in the receptionists, the nurses, the doctors, all know you are coming and treat you so kindly. I could call any time with questions and a nurse would always answer or call me back within 10 minutes. I never EVER waited in the waiting room. I was always seen on time.

I could call any time with questions and a nurse would always answer or call me back within 10 minutes. I never EVER waited in the waiting room. I was always seen on time.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I could call or email Ashley or any other nurse on staff with any questions: I am spotting, is that ok? When does dosage end of Estradiol? I feel nervous! She was patient, kind, straightforward, and responded immediately.
How was your experience with Richard Marrs?
Richard Marrs is an amazing doctor. He is kind and empathic, but also very straightforward. He's very clear about what he sees about what he thinks the best course of action is. He is personable but not emotional, and he is very kind when you are emotional! It's his job to get you pregnant and he exudes calmness, confidence and experience. He's truly the best. He's always on time and saw me every visit that I was doing something other than simply getting blood. He was always prepared. In our first consultation with him, he had gone through the hundreds of pages of my medical records and was prepared with notes to discuss all potential issues he saw.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Richard Marrs?
Come with any questions you have.
Describe the protocols Richard Marrs used in your cycles and their degree of success.
One round of IUI without any drugs, because all my tests were good and fertility issues seemed to be around timing. Two rounds of IUI with Clomid and Estradiol + HCG shots 36 hours before insemination. Basically, to give it a boost and super charge the experience. Second round of IUI with Clomid and Estradiol led to pregnancy.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Richard Marrs.
Approximately $1800 per cycle of IUI. Very straightforward billing - $235/ultrasound. $120 for bloodtests. Etc. You pay each time you leave. They don't take insurance but they provide you will all the appropriate documentation.

Some nurse coordinators [at California Fertility Partners] are not as effective communicating as others. Don't be afraid to ask for another - we did and things were much better after...$6,600 in gestational surrogate medical screening fees. $4,500 in medical fees for one frozen transfer cycle. $2,200 in medications (inclusive of medications for one dropped cycle)...The clinic has very regimented hours for accepting and returning calls. That, combined with vacation and holiday schedules, meant that results weren't communicated on one occasion.

Some nurse coordinators are not as effective communicating as others. Don't be afraid to ask for another - we did and things were much better after.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Ringler was very professional but empathetic throughout the entire process, which was unusually prolonged. He remembered our situation, and ended up not only walking us through the clinical process but also being a professionally subtle part of our emotional journey.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Donna was efficient and referred us to Dr. Ringler for procedural related questions. There were times where we had to play "phone tag" - but nothing hugely problematic other than the fact that the process can be emotionally trying.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call with results
How was your experience with Guy Ringler?
Dr. Ringler is amazing and a consummate professional. We had a number of setbacks throughout the process, which he helped us through as much as possible. For example, there was an early issue with the communication style of one his staff, which was corrected when we switched to another IVF coordinator. We also had one transfer cycle cancelled because of excessive uterine fluid (a uncommon reaction to hormone injections) - which was frustrating because there was no data to tell us whether the problem was likely to recur. Dr. Ringler stuck to the facts, and was patient with our angst over the situation. It all resolved happily, and the grin he flashed at us on the day of transfer is an unforgettable memory from our journey. The only disconnect was that we still don't quite understand whether the survival rate of our frozen embryos was normal: it seems to us that ending up with three surviving embryos when we started with fourteen was not consistent with our expectations.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Guy Ringler?
Understand that Dr. Ringler will only give you the facts, and not definitive recommendations for every decision that needs to be made. And there aren't always going to be data points available for every consideration. But he's a great person and completely trustworthy.
Describe the protocols Guy Ringler used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I don't know the protocol details for our egg donor. Our initial prospective surrogate had been exposed to varicella (chicken pox, through her young children) and the strategy was simply to wait for it to clear her system - which took months. She also had uterine polyps, which had to be removed to make her uterine as optimal an environment as possible. It took a few weeks for her to recover. Dr. Ringler had our surrogate begin with Delestrogen injections, with Progesterone injections after ultrasound confirmation. The surrogate that we ultimately ended up with had excessive uterine fluid build up (2.3 mm) leading up to the scheduled transfer. This is apparently an uncommon reaction to the hormone injections (delestrogen), and has been pretty definitively shown to reduce transfer success rates. Dr. Ringler canceled the transfer cycle, started our surrogate on Provera (10mg for seven days), and reduced her initial delestrogen injection levels (from 2mg to 1 mg). He ramped up her delestrogen injection levels to 2mg, which worried us but it turned out that slowly "ramping up" hormone injections kept uterine fluid build up to a minimum.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Guy Ringler.
$6,600 in gestational surrogate medical screening fees. $4,500 in medical fees for one frozen transfer cycle. $2,200 in medications (inclusive of medications for one dropped cycle).

In fact, if WE were late by only a few minutes we would get a call asking if we were coming. We appreciated their timeliness SO MUCH. At every appointment, he knew our story, and he was just really, really compassionate and caring every step of the way. When we sat down with him at the end of our cycle for our WTF appointment, we could tell he really put a lot of thought into our situation, his prognosis and his advice.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Sima is the best nurse/coordinator ever. She was so responsive to emails, she sat down with us at every single visit, her record keeping was detailed and she knew every detail of our history and plan the entire time we were patients. She is the exact perfect mix of complete professionalism and friendly compassion. We are at a different clinic now and every single time we interact with nurses there (who are not excellent at all), we grumble to each other about how we miss Sima.
How was your experience with Richard Marrs?
He is one of the most caring and compassionate doctors I've seen - fertility or otherwise. He's super professional, but you can tell he really cares. He pays attention and reviews your file before every visit. He's a very reassuring presence in what is a hard and stressful time.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Richard Marrs?
Trust that you are in good hands.
Describe the protocols Richard Marrs used in your cycles and their degree of success.
My protocol was dictated by factors outside of his control, so my experience would not be typical of any other patients'.

The nurses [at California Fertility Partners] were absolutely outstanding! My husband and I lost twin girls at 21 weeks after "graduating" from Dr. Ringler. When we returned, everyone was so respectful of our loss and motivated to give us our happy ending. The nurses are always available to you, call you back the same day you leave a message and know your chart. They explain things very clearly and never make you feel like your questions are silly. They are absolutely the backbone of the clinic.

Dr. Ringler truly took an interest in getting to know my husband and me. You could really sense that he wanted us to be successful and was open to trying all sorts of options to get us our rainbow baby. He s a true miracle worker!

How was your experience with Guy Ringler?
I am currently pregnant with our rainbow baby, and without a doubt that is because of Dr. Ringler's determination and persistence in finding answers and trying different approaches. Positives: Extremely thorough and detailed, well researched, compassionate to your situation and the daunting process of infertility Negatives: May not always seem warm and fuzzy, but I think that's because he's so focused on getting it right. After a not-so-great experience with our first fertility doctor, I realized that I need a doctor who can get the job done. My husband can bring the warmth and fuzziness.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Guy Ringler?
Do not expect him to be warm and fuzzy - that's simply not his nature. But he is an expert in the field and he truly cares for the well-being of his patients. He wants to give you a successful outcome, and this goal is clear at every appointment, consultation, procedure, etc.

The clinic [California Fertility Partners] is beautiful, clean and very pleasant...The nursing staff was excellent overall. Occasionally it was hard to get through to them by phone. After getting transferred to the nursing staff, occasionally they wouldn't be able to pick up and I would have to call the front desk a second time and ask them to take a message and get it to them... I remember thinking at the time that the prices for everything from the IUI procedure to sperm storage were all at least about 20-25% higher than those of our previous clinic.

Describe your experience with California Fertility Partners.
The clinic is beautiful, clean and very pleasant. If I remember correctly, there is stone and water running which creates for a very peaceful environment. The only issue with this clinic is that it is more expensive overall than our other clinic. For this reason, we have decided to return to our other clinic as we pursue further treatment.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Baek did make an effort to connect with me and my wife. She is very smart and knowledgeable, and was willing to explain what she was doing and thinking, which we appreciated. I referred another friend to her, who felt her bedside manner was lacking, however we didn't feel that this was an issue for us.

The nursing staff was excellent overall. Occasionally it was hard to get through to them by phone. After getting transferred to the nursing staff, occasionally they wouldn't be able to pick up and I would have to call the front desk a second time and ask them to take a message and get it to them.
How was your experience with Kelly Baek?
Dr. Baek was able to diagnose or at least explain a couple of small issues in a way that we hadn't understood from our previous doctor (who we also like and respect). She impressed us as being up to date on research and able to communicate clearly. She was warm enough for our taste, though I did refer a good friend who felt she was a bit abrupt in her communication style. While I could see this being an issue for some, we didn't feel it was an issue. We liked her straightforwardness and every once in a while her sense of humor came out.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kelly Baek?
Be ready with your questions, because sometimes she is in and out a bit quickly.
Describe the protocols Kelly Baek used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Because we had already had two failed IVF attempts (at a different clinic) due to my body not responding properly to the fertility medications, we wanted an approach that would be less taxing financially and use fewer medications. Dr. Baek suggested natural cycle IUI. We attempted this twice and unfortunately neither of these worked. At this point, we decided that we should pause and regroup once we figured out whether or not adoption or egg donor IVF would be a better path for us to pursue. Dr. Baek supported this approach.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kelly Baek.
If I remember correctly, the initial appointment was over $400, which gave us a bit of a sticker shock. In general, I remember thinking at the time that the prices for everything from the IUI procedure to sperm storage were all at least about 20-25% higher than those of our previous clinic.

The clinic is awesome. I had different nurses that helped to treat me, but they never treated me like a number. Dr. Baek was available via email and very responsive.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
They were warm and positive. When I was prepping for my IUI, one of the nurse's that explained instructions to me, said "when you are pregnant". This was significant to me because she used language that assumed that the IUI would be successful. This is a big contrast from medical professionals who are doom and gloom or focused on statistics or don't want to get your hopes up. It causes absolutely no harm to get someone's hopes up, in my opinion, but the opposite can actually be detrimental.
How was your experience with Kelly Baek?
Kelly Baek is extremely talented and committed to finding the root of the issue. She is meticulous and methodical. I love that CFP in general is not an IVF factory. They are conservative and will do all tests needed before concluding the course of action. I also love that Dr. Baek emphasizes the importance of accompanying treatments like Chinese herbs and acupuncture. With Dr. Baek's help, I got pregnant on my first round of medicated IUI and am now 32 weeks pregnant with a baby girl, after three previous miscarriages (at least one with a genetically normal fetus).
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kelly Baek?
She can be a bit awkward at times and not always super warm, but she is very committed. After talking to many other women in this area who have gone to other clinics, I'm convinced she's arguably the best RE in this area and probably one of the best in the country.

Everyone [California Fertility Partners] was pretty great in the office. The lab, the billing dept, the front desk. I could usually always get the appointment that I wanted. The only thing that bothered me was if they gave you a window of time for when they would call with test results they would always call at the latter end of the time frame.... our IVF was roughly $18,000. The IUI were around $3000 each....My nurse Erin had just started so I was a little nervous to have someone brand new handle my care but she was very careful to go over everything with me and write everything down.

How was your experience with Richard Marrs?
Dr Marrs is very business like and cuts to the chase without any fluff. If that’s what you like then he is perfect for you. There’s very little hand holding when it comes to him. He can come across as a little cold but when it comes down to getting the job done he definitely delivers.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Richard Marrs?
Make sure you ask all the questions you have when you are there and always ask for potential risks or side effects of anything you are doing.
Describe the protocols Richard Marrs used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We did 4 IUI’s with no success. The 3rd and 4th were with clomid. The 4th he increased my clomid dose and this caused a cyst. I was never told about this potential risk and because this cyst developed I wasn’t able to move onto IVF for 3 more cycles. This was a huge blow to me and wish I would have known the risk ahead of time. We then moved into IVF. I don’t recall all of the meds we did but it was normal protocol. After the transfer I did progesterone suppositories and got a positive pregnancy result. My daughter was born in March 2017.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Richard Marrs.
I don’t recall exact numbers but our IVF was roughly $18,000. The IUI were around $3000 each

Although Dr. Baek's office is quite busy, I felt that she was invested in our care and our outcome. She treated us as humans and was kind and supportive. Although we felt our visits were rushed at times, she was always attentive.

My nurse was communicative, thorough and supportive. She took a lot of time explaining medication protocols and would always follow up when contacted. When our nurse was out of the office, the clinic made sure to assign another nurse in her place in order to ensure continuity of care.

How was your experience with Kelly Baek?
Dr. Baek is extremely sharp, thorough and diligent. She does all of the ultrasounds herself compared to other clinics that have a nurse complete this procedure. She was dedicated to our treatment from beginning to end. She is extremely busy, so there were times when I felt rushed or felt that she was short with answers, but she ultimately answered all questions. Initially, I thought she was not warm but as I got to know her better, I experienced warmth and kindness.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kelly Baek?
Trust her process as she knows what she is doing. If you feel rushed during your visit, the nurses are there to provided support and are happy to answer questions.
Describe the protocols Kelly Baek used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Medicated IUI -- failed. 1st round of IVF: Follistom, Menopur, ganirelix antagonist, HCG trigger -- resulted in 2 poor quality embryos along with a few eggs that were premature. Fresh transfer of 2 embryos - Negative. 2nd IVF: Augmented minimal med cycle. Later administration of Follistom, Menopur, ganirelix antagonist, HCG trigger + Lupron trigger. Resulted in 5 eggs retrieved, 4 mature, all 4 made it to day 5 blast. 3 PGD normal embryos. Result: Positive pregnancy test!
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kelly Baek.
Each round of IVF costs approx $10-$15k. Medications are additional $4k approx.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Kelly Baek was like a detective when it came to figuring out what was going on with us. We'd miscarried more than 10 times before seeing her. I suspected immune issues and she agreed, along with a few other things that needed tweaking. I only had to do two IUIs with her to have success. The first IUI was actually a chemical pregnancy. Then, she adjusted and put me on an immune drug and the second one worked. She also got the most follicles to develop than ever had before.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
very compassionate. they are busy but they take the time to make sure they understand what the RE wants and that the patient understands the instructions.
How was your experience with Kelly Baek?
Dr. Baek is all business in that she knows her stuff. I've met several REs who are super nice but are not skilled. She's incredibly up-to-date on the latest research and she's technically a very skilled RE. She is also very kind and warm and a mom herself. She's an extremely busy person but she still made time to communicate with my acupuncturist about my diagnoses and treatment. I needed all hands on deck to become pregnant and stay pregnant and she got that 100%. After I graduated from her care, she would still answer my emails, etc.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kelly Baek?
Don't waste any time - go straight to her!
Describe the protocols Kelly Baek used in your cycles and their degree of success.
injectibles - higher doses dexamethasone (immune supressor) sythroid (slight hypo thyroid)
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kelly Baek.
IUI was around $1,200 (for all appts, etc) not including meds

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Baek is very detailed oriented, the type of person who you affectionately refer to as OCD. That is what we wanted in a doctor! We had gone to a doctor prior to Dr. Baek who was a warm guy with great bedside manner, the type of guy you would want to vacation with, but he lacked attention to detail and we had dismal results. Dr. Baek can be reserved, but she is an amazing doctor.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
They were warm and friendly, always nice, extremely competent.
How was your experience with Kelly Baek?
I was 42.5 yrs old. We had been told by a prior doctor to use donor eggs. Dr. Baek told us we owed it to ourselves to try at least one round with our own eggs! She said she would transfer up to 5 embryos. She checked, monitored and double checked my progress every step of the way and consulted her colleagues when questions about my care arose. She is an extremely experienced and detail oriented doctor.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kelly Baek?
Dr. Baek has a professional reserve. Sometimes I felt that she thought we understood more about the process than we did, even though we had been through it before with a prior doctor. I know many infertility patients are very educated about the process, their results and utilize online support communities. We didn't and as a result, I understood in a general sense what was happening, but I didn't have all the detailed data. Maybe that was for the best and it allowed me to not over stress about every little thing. I always felt like I should ask more questions but we didn't really know the right questions to ask. Dr. Baek asked at every visit if we had questions and when we said no, she didn't delve further.

On time appointments [at California Fertility Partners]. Great lab. Prompt and organized. I never felt like a number. They were efficient and friendly and yet I always could ask the nurse a question if I needed to. That I really appreciated! There’s a Lot of email and text communication which is as easy to read through the patient portal.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Kelly Baek met with us personally and went carefully over all our information. She is patient and calm and a brilliant diagnostitician. She is not, however, a therapist. We really needed to see a brilliant mind in order to figure out why I was miscarrying, and we’d knew that she didn’t have a reputation for being a hand holder so we prepared ourselves. However upon working with her I have discovered she has empathy, humor and cares very deeply about her patients... but is first and foremost a doctor and scientist, and I had to deal with facts and figures in her office, rather than emotions. It’s a rocky and emotional road, so you bet I was in a therapists office to deal with my feelings.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I can’t say enough good things. Nancy and the other nurses are wonderful.
How was your experience with Kelly Baek?
She does everything herself. Ultrasounds, visits, retrievals, everything. Everything there was to do, she did. It was never left to a tech or anyone else. I did have a procedure with Dr March but she was there and they worked well together. I appreciated being able to see her every time I came in. If I had questions afterwards I went through a nurse but that’s to be expected. But she was hands on through the entire 3 cycles of IVF we did with her.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kelly Baek?
First of all, IVF is HARD. It’s tempting to make your doctor God, and to expect to have your feelings soothed, and look for comfort when some cases there is none. We had vast amounts of eggs- and a minuscule fraction were genetically normal. We spent all our money and we’re running ragged by the drugs and the worry and the strain of it all. None of this is the doctor’s fault. She is doing her best to figure out he best course of action. She is not warm and fuzzy as primary qualities. And we tend to expect that (unfairly) from women. Hold it together and try to approach her scientifically while you get your emotional needs met elsewhere (sliding scale therapy is a godsend.) that way you can have sole emotion processing and be able to hear what the doctor says with a Little more objectivity and less emotion. Dr Baek is taking care of one part of the equation and make sure you take care of the other parts- the pain and suffering and grief.
Describe the protocols Kelly Baek used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I produced scads of eggs- one time, 44. And only one in all my cycles was genetically normal. She could see from my first doctor that my eggs were post mature and that I was triggered too early. So she changed the protocol to include fewer meds and adjusted medication and timing each time with labs and ultrasounds. Each cycle was fitted to me- no cookie cutter protocol. She was ALWAYS adjusting. And despite all my egg production I was never overstimulated with OHSS. I thank her for that.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kelly Baek.
It was all out of pocket. She’s comparable to most clinics and i s surprised- I thought she’d be more expensive than others. I think with medication and all labs and procedures and everything, i rounded the number to figure about 25K per cycle. But that includes things like hysteroscopies and the endometrial function test so I may Jaheim paid more than someone who didn’t need those things. They are upfront about all costs and give you a sheet of paper with the rates.

Erin [a nurse at CA Fertility Partners] was so helpful throughout our process. She explained what the steps were, what was happening next. There were a few times, especially at the beginning when trying to gather old records and see what we needed before we could start a new cycle, where a few things (sort of) fell through the cracks. Nothing major at all. But she was very quick to respond to emails, always answer every single question - big or small. And during the medicine tutorial she was very patient and helpful. We hadn't done medicine in a year and I was a bit nervous about the whole thing and she totally put my mind at ease. While she was out of town, we saw several of the nurses and they were all very kind and helpful. Anita especially made the experience AMAZING! She was the after hours on-call nurse who talked us off the ledge during one crazy night of injectables and helped us get through it all.

Describe your experience with California Fertility Partners.
Everything was fantastic. The atmosphere is warm, calm and welcoming. The front desk staff were friendly, knowledgable and helpful. The billing staff...amazing!! What could be a scary experience (seeing the $$ put out on paper), was clear and concise. And the phlebotomists were the best I've ever had.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Marrs started every visit looking us in the eye, shaking our hand, asking how we were doing...then actually listening to the answer!! He was up to date on anything that had happened between visits (blood work, semen analysis, new records received.) He even joked when my husband was dressed up one day, and apologized when an ultrasound was taking longer than usual!! He always made us feel safe and comfortable and like we were being taken care of.

How was your experience with Richard Marrs?
Dr. Marrs was very candid about our situation and experience. He didn't sugar coat anything, which I TOTALLY appreciated. This wasn't our first experience with a fertility doctor so we wanted to know the good, the bad and the ugly. He was very caring and knowledgeable, but honest and to the point. For me, it was the perfect combination. In our consultation he explained everything fully, in detail, like we were intelligent human beings. He didn't talk down to us, or skip things, thinking we wouldn't understand. And we NEVER felt like there was a stupid question. He answered everything we asked without making us feel like we were bothering or annoying him. We felt like he wanted us to be up to date and know exactly what was going on.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Richard Marrs?
Don't be afraid to ask questions!! Anything you're wondering, anything you've read or heard about. Just ask. He will take the time to explain. And if the explanation isn't clear to you, please ask again. Make sure you are 100% comfortable with everything going on and you know why he's doing what he's doing. For me, information is power and stress reducing.
Describe the protocols Richard Marrs used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We were doing an IVF cycle. I had to go on the pill for a week to help clear the corpus luteum from one ovary and suppress the follicles in the other. After a week they were synced so we started Clomid for 5 days, with Follistim and Menopur injectables every other day. After the 5 days, we did the injectables every day and added Ganirelix toward the end. Because of my age, we did lower dose meds and it was amazing! I felt so much better and my follicles stayed synced the whole time. We got a great number of mature eggs - twice as many as my cycles at a different clinic, and we are still waiting the results of genetic testing.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Richard Marrs.
I've been to one other clinic, and these costs were pretty much in line with what we paid there - actually a little less overall.

Describe your experience with California Fertility Partners.
Well organized - you always get an appointment on the day you need one, and they have a good system for labs etc. However, the clinic is cold and impersonal. It's clearly a business, not a place where you go to get care.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Baek doesn't seem to know how to treat her patients like humans. She gets super irritated if you ask questions - everything always feels rushed, and she looks annoyed if she has to pause as she's running out the door to answer a question. She is also super defensive. We asked her a question about our results during an ultrasound appointment, and she told us completely the wrong thing - when we brought the results back the next time and asked her about the discrepancy, she was really snappy, sarcastic and irritated with us, and said we shouldn't ask questions during ultrasound appointments because she doesn't have time during those appointments to answer questions. She never once asked how we were feeling about the process. Her questions are technical and robotic. She is focused on making money, not on caring for patients.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Impersonal, cold, it's a factory line getting as many people in and out as quickly as possible
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Provided conflicting information
How was your experience with Kelly Baek?
I felt like I was a car on a factory line - she didn't treat us like we were human beings experiencing an emotional, somewhat stressful experience. She's robotic, irritated if you ask questions, and generally just made us super stressed and nervous to raise any concerns or even ask about what was coming up next. I'm a medical doctor myself, and I cannot imagine treating my patients with such a complete lack of empathy. I believe that a lot of the success in fertility treatment relies on the emotional wellbeing of the patient, not just on how technically good the doctor is. This is where she falls so far short of what you would (and should) expect from a clinician. She can't seem to see her patients as whole people with feelings, just eggs, sperm and a uterus.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kelly Baek?
Please look for another doctor - there are so many good doctors in Los Angeles. It's not worth it.
Describe the protocols Kelly Baek used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Dr Baek didn't really take the time to explain her treatment strategies or protocols. I truly don't really know what her treatment protocols are. We just arrived at the appointments, were seen hurriedly by Dr Baek, and then were shunted to the nurse who gave us a print-out with instructions for the next set of medicines for me to inject, and the date for our next appointment. It seemed like we were driving the process - IUI failed, so we asked if we could do IVF next and she agreed. We had to stop an IVF a few days into the cycle as my oocytes didn't synchronize, and she didn't suggest any alternative course of action after she told us. We sat there sad and disappointed, and then my husband then asked if we could convert to an IUI, and she said "yes, I supposed we could". I only found out a few days into that IVF cycle that she was planning to send our embryos for genetic testing, and she didn't bother to explain that would mean they would freeze and implant in a later cycle - I heard this from the nurse later almost in passing.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kelly Baek.
I don't know - our insurance covered this, so I'm not sure of the cost.

Dr Marrs does all of his own ultrasounds. He has the most kind and gentle bedside.manner. He always clams me down and answers all of y questions

She was awesome. Always emailing me back and answering all my questions. Anita was the other nurse that help me when Juliana was off. She was just as amazing. And honestly everyone at the office from front desk to phlebotomist ( ask for Ken if you have bad veins. He is the best) are wonderful.
How was your experience with Richard Marrs?
I had two failed transfers so I decided to go Dr Marrs for a third opinion. His office requested I have all of my paperwork sent before our consultation,so he could have an opinion on our situation. This was the first time a doctor had made the effort to do so, which in itself was encouraging. When we met with him he had actually read all my records and went over what he believed was the issue. It’s was so refreshing. He did not blame my age or egg quality but rather told me about research they are doing about timing of transfer. So we tried the mock transfer twice and took biopsies and found out my body was very sensitive to progesterone and I needed minimal amounts of the drug, not more as other doctors had led me to believe . I am now pregnant thanks to Dr Marrs’ persistence. He is so smart, precise, compassionate and cautious. All qualities every fertility doctor should posses. He is not a cookie cutter doctor. He takes his time to evaluate his patients and find a bespoke solution that works for them. He doesn’t view his practice as a baby factory, but rather as an artisan workshop. I cant say enough wonderful things about him. We owe Dr Marrs everything. If you are struggling to conceive look no further than Dr Marrs. He is absolutely the very best.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Richard Marrs?
He should be the very first doctor you meet once you know you are going to need help conceiving. It’s the biggest regret that I have. There is no other doctor that will care more about helping you. He is brilliant and compassionate. A very rare combo in this field.
Describe the protocols Richard Marrs used in your cycles and their degree of success.
For my transfer we started with BC, then started Lupron injections. Then we used estrogen patches and progesterone inserts before my transfer. The progesterone inserts were from MDRpharmacy. It’s a version that they compound themselves. We started with 50mg and increased to 200mg 4 times a day. After my positive pregnancy we add progesterone injections as well. It’s also compounded at MDR. It’s a sesame oil base so not as thick as the once you get at regular pharmacy. I also took medrol 5 days before transfer and prednisone 10mg after transfer till week 10.

I mostly felt like a human. The places where I didn't were around scheduling and unique circumstances. Dr Marrs is both incredibly calming and smart. It's always helpful when he reminds you he invented a procedure he is trying. When it was time to move from IUI to IVF, he told us. He was honest and helpful.

We did our first IUI with Clomid, trigger, progesterone and estrogen. He monitored progress very closely. The second IUI he cut back on Clomid because I respond very well. Our first IVF we did gonadatropins - pretty standard. We also opted to do PGS so we knew we were transfering good blastocysts.

She doesn't take a lot of time with you or go into much explanation about various options. You need to do the research on your own and guide the process, unless you want to fully put your care in her hands without feeling much control of the process.

How was your experience with Kelly Baek?
I think she is smart, capable, but also has too many patients. The amount of time she takes with each is slim, we feel rushed to ask any questions and we don't feel many options are presented or explained, maybe they need the nurse to do some of this (i.e., mini IVFs vs full, ICSI vs not, PGS - what type are they doing, with what group... ). There's some information gaps that someone at the clinic could cover.

Do your research on your own, have your questions ready for you two minute slot with her.

[CFP- Los Angeles is] Very professional, clean office. Wide range of treatment options, connection with local pharmacy for all meds (one less thing to worry about!) Front office can be a little intimidating but they handle a lot and know what they’re doing. Billing department is friendly and helpful.... They [the nurses] were always available if I had questions, always willing to walk me through step by step so I knew exactly what was happening and when and very encouraging.

Great clinic [California Fertility Partners]. They are always on time for every appointment. Hardly any waiting. The receptionists are very nice and always willing to help. The clinic has it's own lab and surgical center in the same building which makes it very easy....Expensive, but in line with other Fertility clinics in the area...Erin is very nice and accommodating. She's very fast with getting back to you and calling in prescriptions...

He [Dr. Ringler of California Fertility Partners] was very clear about the process. It was up to my husband and myself to handle the emotional roller coaster that is infertility treatment....For a patient this is an emotional process, but for the doctors this is their every day job.

How was your experience with Guy Ringler?
He was very clear about the process. It was up to my husband and myself to handle the emotional roller coaster that is infertility treatment.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Guy Ringler?
Think of the process as a marathon race and each cycle as one mile within your journey to try to reach the finish line.
Describe the protocols Guy Ringler used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I started infertility treatment in 1992 after I had had two ectopic pregnancies. First we used clomid, but after testing they found I had developed enzymes against sperm after the ectopic pregnancies. So we moved to GIFT which worked after a first pregnancy which was a blighted ovum. Subsequently, I had 5 more GIFT procedures to have a total of three children.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Guy Ringler.

After the egg extraction, there was confusion about which medication to take. There was miscommunication between the doctor and the nurses...They [nurses at California Fertility Partners] seem to be readily available and can answer longer questions you may have...She [Dr. Kelly Baek] doesn't talk down to you and is fairly conservative. She also tries to trouble shoot in advance so that there will be less chance of failure. She doesn't engage in long conversations unless you schedule a consultation with her, and then you will have to pay a consultation fee...Be ready for a lot of testing (which is good). She's not super warm, but she is very competent and knows what she is talking about. She is a bit inaccessible.
